Benchmade Nimravus and Nim Cub?

Looking at perhaps getting one of these. I'm gearing up for a thru-hike next year (if budget permits...) and I've been thinking it's a great excuse to pick up a new fixed blade. I have/had Dozier, Koster, Fallkniven, Ontario RAT, Buck, Mora in various sizes, thinking about trying something new.

Thoughts on either the Nimravus or new Nim Cub?

Here are some links to reviews on the nimravus

A few videos (also regarding nutnfancy's video, take it, like all of them with a grain of salt, as some people, i.e. nutn may say that it weighs too much for them, or its too thick etc, which you may be fine with

Also, if possible, you should try and handle it, as one knife may seeming heavy to one person, may seem lightweight to another.

Personally I like the way the nimb cub 2 looks, however I wanted something a bit more stout and robust, but it is meant to be a pretty decent looking knife, with a bit opf tacticool/military flair chucked into the mix.

EDIT: how much are you willing to spend, as I have heard the benchmade rant is meant to be quite good as well, and some prefer it as they find the blade shape/ergonomics better, and maybe it looks a bit less intimidating

I know this is a lot of reviews to wade through but hope this helps you make up your mind mate, good luck

I have them both....good knives I have used mine quite bit I belive the steel in mine is d2 but dont quote me,
I will look in the knife case tommrow....
I use the bigger size the most it just seems to fit be better.

Hi JCK, I am leaning in favor of the Nimravus too, thanks for the links it will take me some time to work my way through all of them.

Any more opinions, please keep them coming!

I had one of the original style cubs and it served me well- was plenty stout enough (used on dozens of deer and antelope splitting rib cages) but the grip wasn't the most comfortable- fairly sharped edged in spots

it was fairly light for a knife of that size (iirc ~ 4.oz for a roughly 8" knife), that's a plus- a similarly sized F1 is ~ 6 oz

I like the look of a coated knife, but I think for wood work your better w/o

it was a decent enough knife, but not exactly the knife that would come to mind (my mind anyways :)) for a thru hike, but I think it's certainly capapble

The Nimravus is a good knife, I have 4 and one cub. I would likely pick the full size unless you were planning on carrying a second larger blade.

The AT.

Why, what would be your choice of a knife for a thru?

Nice- hope you get to do it :)

I'm a bit of a gram weanie, so personally I'd be going very light- fixed blade w/ ~ 2.5-3" blade. I use a multi fuel stove- Esbit and wood, w/ a preference for wood if available. A small fixed blade handles these duties very well, I've never found myself wanting for a bigger knife. I like to fish high mountain lakes and occasionally take a grouse or two in the fall backpacking- small knife handles these duties as well.

One of the many nice small customs from JK, Landi, Gossman, Koster, others has fit the bill for me. Recently I picked up a WM1, appears that will fit the bill as well.

Well I had ruled out getting a custom for a thru because even if it was a relatively inexpensive custom I would be pretty annoyed about losing it if it should get lost, so I am looking amongst production knives only. For some time I was considering just taking a Mora and my favorite folder (whatever that may be when I'm ready to go) but then I figured a Mora is a pretty boring choice.

I have a first gen Nimravus and Cub,both are made from ATS-34.Not bad knives and they're lightweight,1\8"stock.
