Benchmade Nimravus

154CM is better. It is easier to sharpen and it is more rust resistant. No wait. D2 is better. It is harder than the standard 154CM Nimravus and it will hold an edge longer. No wait. 154CM is better. No wait D2 is better. No wait. They both have special features. What's better is what you prefer in a knife steel.:) Welcome to the forums.

;) I know theoretical specifikations of D2 and 154 but i'd like to hear a bit froma practition.
What i'm looking for- is best toughness and wear resistance, like M2 but Benchmade do not produce any more...Don't they.

You can still find M2 versions, but as they were never that popular to begin with (production wise), they are far between. They do show up on the bay regularly.

D2 vs 154CM will probably come down to what you value more: rust resistance or edge retention.

Personally, I'd go 154CM. I don't think there will be a significant edge retention difference.

Note that the NIMRAVUS is not a BUSSE or such type "super tough" knife. These knives have a thinner blade and seem better as GP camp knives IMO; i.e. they are not stout enough for heavy prying.

I think with CP154 you may have slightly better edge and slightly better corrosion resistance, with D2 slightly better better edge retention and slightly better toughness.

Thanks, Vassili.

For toughness and wear resistance go with D-2

What do you intend to do with it?
I have an M-2 Nimravus, and as far as I can tell it was designed as a fighting knife and not much else. If that’s what you need then it’ll probably suit you just fine, but I wouldn’t recommend it for utility. During heavy cutting it has lots of hot spots and I could never get a good grip on it (mostly because of the deep choil), I ended up making my own handle scales that fill in the choil and round everything out. After modification it works wonderfully, I can actually use it enough to appreciate the blade.

My M2 works fine for me - so YMMV.

I'm just happy I got the early sheath marked "Not for upside down carry." It worked so much better in the issue vest under the upper left magazine pocket.

I understand the later sheaths aren't so much - or are too much. But no problem, get a new sheath like I did for my Swamp Rat.

For toughness and wear resistance, go for D2. But as you may know, D2 is less corrosion resistant than 154CM (or so they say). So, if you're using the knife in wet or salty environment, you'd go for 154CM.

I've had no problem with D2 so far. Saying from personal experience, D2's corrosion resistance is adequate for most environment, I think, unless you're using it around sea water.

I have 154CM Nimravus, and it's fine for me, but I may go for D2 if I buy it again. (Only 154CM version was available when I bought that one.) While 154CM is good enough, I sometimes feel that D2 would be better for blade this big.

For edge retention, I have BM211 D2 and it holds edge better than my other 154CM blades.

I prefer Benchmade's tool steels.
If I couldn't get an M2 blade, I went with D2. I have a Nimravus and a Nim Cub in M2, and I have a CSK, and 710 in D2. I like my Rukus (S30V), but I'd kill to have an M2 blade on it.
