Benchmade omega springs

Finally got tired of sending my knives back to benchmade for broken springs, and turn around time about a month. Have carried the 943 for probably 8 years and never broke a spring, but recently had both break in my 484 and 940, not sure what is going on with the springs breaking so easily lately. Decided to try and make my own using 22 gauge memory wire and it worked great. Took a while to bend the spring just right but once I got it close enough and installed them the knife flicks open/closed just like normal. Hoping the memory wire holds up longer. Have done a set for my 940 and 943 and now have a few factory spares just in case

Still waiting the return.of my 484 to get springs replaced that benchmade received over a month ago

+1 on the stainless memory wire. Holds up great.

These are the tools I used, the one on the left is a wirecutter. Original spring at the bottom.

Just roll it around something similar to the size you want the bend radius to be. Remember to add some length so you can cut it off.

Really it's not that important, get a nice even bend, put it in.

The memory wire will outlast the originals by far. A very useful MOD if you like your axis lock knife.

Nope, for example the small and large Grips are different.

I know cause I live in Norway(they don't send those to US citizens) and they managed to send me the wrong springs..

Wondering if all axis benchmades use the same size spring

They don't. The axis bars and their travel distances are different on different sized knives. I think they also use thicker ones for the Black Class since that's their tactical hard use line.

Awesome man! Thank you cause I am also always looking for DIY at home fixes.

I have also heard many people have had success with piano wire. Actually alot of vape shops or online have titanium wire which has really good strength and stability. One could easily twist it into an omega shape.

I live in Canada so sending anything into the States is a no-no. Back last summer, during a free month of Amazon Prime, I bought a jewelers pliers set and a roll of memory wire so when the inevitable happens, I'm good to go. Got to keep these babies fit in as good condition as possible.

I'm actually looking forward to when one of my Benchies bust a spring.

Now trying to decide what to do about my axis assist emissary 477. Have only had it for a few months and dropped it the other day and must have broke the axis assist spring. Cant decide if I should send it back for repair or just leave it as a manual axis opener

I've got 7 Axis knives and been lucky with the omegas, so far. I get the feeling its just a matter of time before
one gives me trouble. I really need to get the materials and practice making the almost perfect spring before
my back is against the wall and I find myself in line at the post office to mail a pkg to Oregon.

Benchmade really needs to review their small parts policy and sell them at the very least.

Out of curiosity, how do you even break these things? I hear about it being the downside of BMs but of the 3 folders I have this never happened. Rift, Contego, 940. You think over time water will eventually get in there on microscopic layers and make the metal brittle at the top where there is the most bend?

What gauge are you guys getting?? I'm surprised 14 gauge works seems thick

If you live in the States, I would recommend sending it in to BM. However if not, or you just want to frigg around with your stuff, there is a good video (actually several) on how to reset the coil spring. I had to do it when I re-assisted my 580.

There was a post by BM, in their official forum, answering that the omegas will fail at some point. However, some seem to fail sooner than others. It really depends I guess. Some say they cycle their BMs multiple times daily for years and never had one fail. Others say theirs after only a few months.

I am, by nature, a pessimist, so I know that the damn things will break sooner rather than later in my case.

Thanks for posting that vid. I dont have any BM Assisted, but that vid knocks it out of park for clarity and simplicity.
