i am going to buy either a emerson or a benchmade folder. i like the CQC7 design. does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? i haven't ever bought a high quality knife before so please tell me everything i need to know along with a fair price.

thanks

If you can, get both because the Benchmadeis ddiscontinued and if you canget a new BM CQC7, it may be worth something some day. I like the Emerson production knives better personally because they use the Allen screwsand have reversible clips.

Welcome to the forums bandit007!! Glad to have ya here. Now for your question.
Which knives have you actually held in your hand??
Get the one that feels right to you.
How much do you want to spend on your new knife purchase??
You have a $50.00 to $200.00 range your asking about.
How is the knife going to be used??
Everyday, once in awhile, or is it for a collection.

Let us know!

Blades

If you like the CQC7 design, I would recommend the Emerson if you plan to use it hard daily. The Emerson is improved because the edges of the handle are smoothed out so they don't bite into your fingers. Also in general, I like the action on the Emersons much more so than the Benchmades, it's a whole lot smoother. Also in my opinion, Emerson makes higher quality knives than Benchmade and the CQC7B is also one of my favorite folders. It's my daily defense knife.

i will be carrying this knife with my glock 19 or my sig-sauer p239. i can spend up to 120$ so let me know what the best knife would be. people on the benchmade forum said that emerson's screws are week and that emersons are not as well made as benchmade. however, i have a buddy that is in the naval special warfare feild and he said good things about both. why is a tanto tip better/worse that a normal point?

thanks

I've had good warranty service from both companies, and I've used the warranty service of both companies. And other respectable companies too.

If you want a good general utility knife with a bit of an "attitude" and an edge that's centered on the blade for cutting exactly where you want to cut, get a Benchmade.

If you want a knife that comes out of your pocket already open, so that people who are used to me and a bunch of knives all about and know I'm harmless say "Is that legal?!?!" get an Emerson Commander.

If you want a left-hand grind steak knife whose angular secondary point protects the rest of the sharp edge from contact with the china plate, get an Emerson with that geo-tanto blade.

If you're thinking "dark alley" or "secret mission," consult your martial arts instructor and not me.

I personally carry a Emerson Raven with the "Tanto" point, and I love it. It has primarily the same blade as the CQC-7, but a different handle! I also own Raven with the "Spear" point blade and 3 Emerson CQC-7's, and 3 Benchmade CQC-7's. I personally think all of them are GREAT! I carry the Ravens because I LOVE the handles, but the CQC-7 are just as nice and lower priced. I have noticed all of my Emersons have little flaws (mainly in the handles, or scratchs; but nothing that effects the performance of the knife), but my Benchmades are flawless. I find the Emersons are smoother, and are a little more comfortable because of the rounded edges, but the Benchmades are less expensive, and are discontinued, so may be worth more in the future. Either way, whatever your choice, you would be getting a great knife backed by great companies, with great warranties......

Have you considered the Benchmade Stryker? I personally like the Stryker more than the CQC7, and you can get the Stryker in M2- gotta love that M2.

I would definitely choose an emerson over a Benchmade because emersona you can take apart also the new CQC7 emerson makes is awsome, you can probally find an awsome price for it here at the trading forum or over at ebay,
I myself just got one in the mail 2 days ago and it is now my daily carry..........

M2 is a tool steel that Benchmade has started using on some knives in their line.

what does secret mission or dark alley mean? i have a glock for a serious situation. i don't get what you 2 are talking about.

I have a Benchmade CQC7 by Emerson and am not too impressed. It's stiff to open and if you loosen the tension screw, the blade drags on the liner. Plus the liner lock is very hard to disengage. I'd opt for the Stryker in M2 steel rather than the ATS-34.

Do it right,or not at all.

I take my Benchmades 975 over Emerson CQC not to vain my investment on torx wrench.

I've got both Emerson and Benchmade knives, no Stryker, but will soon, my knives are like my kids: I love everyone in their own special way! Pick up a Rogue Warrior book by Richard Marcinko, he favors quality equipment, but as long as it works, he'll use it because when it comes down to him, or the other guy he doesn't care what it is, as long as it goes bang or slice!

I think what he's trying to say is that you have to know your equipment, it's strengths, weaknesses and adjust accordingly for the environment it'll be used in...

If at all possible, try to hold and work the action on the knives themselves, that'll probably the decision maker. Or do what I do: buy both!

M2 is a non stainless tool steel used by Benchmade in some of their knives like AFCK and Stryker. It takes a great edge, holds it a long time and it tough stuff. I have owned Emersons and sold them but still have my M2 AFCK. I understand that auto knives are legal in FL. Recommend you also check out a Microtech, very, very good auto and manual knives.

Forgot to mention that not all AFCKs and Strykers are made with M2 blades, most are ATS-34. So if you want an M2 version, be sure and specify. They cost a little more but are worth it.

Go find an BM Emerson designed CQC9. I like it much better than the CQC7.

I would have to agree with Soloman, the Benchmade stryker would be a perfect first high quality daily knife.
