I want a new knife. ( don't we all ?) Help me pick between a benchmade 151 fixed griptilian and a spyderco FB02 Bill Moran drop point. Before you say it I already thought about getting both. It will be used for camping, hunting, woods walking ect. Thanks.

Handle both, pick the one that feels best to you. Both are good knives made by good companies, can't go wrong with either. As such it will come down to personal preferance.

i have the bowie style moran and got a 520 last week, bit like a metal griptillian. ive taken the moran camping, really handy. i read a review by fred perrin whosaid tha the moran made a good thrower. i went out this morning and tried it.....it doesnt...but if you can throw you can throw ANYTHING...i found it way too light to throw. id get the grip and use a kitchen knife. but it all depends on what youve already got in your stash.

The BM 151 is an excellent knife, but you might also want to take a look at the Spyderco Temperance FB...

Chicken or Egg?

This thread has (and will) be done many times.

The only way to decide is to do what we do, buy about 6 of each, and slowly decide what features you like the best. Realize that none of them have all the features you like in one package, and create a rotation of a dozen knives into your life. You'll feel bad for leaving more than 10 at home at once, so you'll carry 3. Then you won't be able to decide which one to use to cut things, and you'll have to think of what blade profile, steel, grind or edge would do the best job. By then your wife will have hacked it open with scissors, making it a moot point.

Welcome to bladeforums, that story above is exactly where you are heading. :) We're all like lemmings jumping off the cliff for a new knife.

I have the Moran. It carries like a dream. You cannot tell it is there. I will not tell you how well it cuts. It has to be seen to be believed. I would not pry with it though.

I EDC a Mini Griptilian and really enjoy it. I have a Benchmade Mini-Pika lowride clip on it, and it works great for me.

I'm a fan of folding knives, but I think either of those will work well for you.

This is a nobrainer to me. Get the Moran. Classic design, classic designer, lots of good reviews. People hunt for the original version with the leather sheath.

havent owned a spyderco, own a benchmade fixed blade and i love it. i have handled a few sypders and i think the benchmades feel better overall, just IMO though. both are great knives!

I prefer Spyderco over Benchmade, and therefore am going to state: Get the Moran!! Although, you will probably end up with both at some point.

I have been wanting the bill Moran for some time then I saw the fixed griptilian. Maybe the spyder should come first if for no other reason then to remember Mr. Moran.

Funny as that would be my deciding factor. I have neither the Moran or the Grip but the design qualities are there regardless if he actuallly forged it. You can't compare to that.

Forego both of them in favor of the Spyderco Temperance. Puts both of them to shame. Hands down.

The temperance is one to think about. Like a fixed blade endura got to love that.
