EDIT:: Thanks for the answers! I'll use it without worry :)

Benchmade numbers the first 1000 of about every knife they make, right? I assume these are no better then the regular production?

Is there any reason to not use one of these for regular use? or if planning to use it should I trade around and get the numbered one to a collector and use a regular?

No, sometimes there are only 250 or 500 supposed "Pre-Production" knives.

Some of these are different enough to look for - I like the Pre-Pro 806 knives a bit better than the production versions despite the serrations, for example.

The value of knives is very much based upon perception, so to some people the Pre-Pro knives have some value, especially if comparing a knife over its production.

However, many people couldn't care less.

If you fall into the last mentioned category, use it. Most wouldn't care.

i had a pre-pro 806 myself,

i have never seen a pre-pro bring anything extra though, and i have had a lot of them.

other than a couple of models i have seen which differed a lot for production the same goes for prototypes, they just make too many of them, on BM they usually make between 400 or so which means they arent exactly rare, spyderco for example makes only 5 or 6 and one rarely gets out of the spyderco shop, the 1 i have seen selling (a gunting IIRC) was going for $500.

I have an older Pre-production BM 5000, and I have used the hell out of it. I don't really think that it brings any additional value, and I bought it to use as an EDC.

I say use the hell out of it and enjoy, just my two cents :)
