I haven't disassembled the new Presidio series yet, but if it is engineered like other Benchmade autos:
1) The coil spring in the auto function is recessed into the blade's pivot area and joins the handle and blade with two tensioned posts. If you swapped out the blade for a non-auto version, the auto function would cease to exist, as it would no longer have a spring, nor the required post hole for the spring to tension itself on.
2) The Axis auto operates on the premise that the blade is under tension when closed, and the only thing preventing the blade from opening is the Axis bar. The knife is "locked shut" and under tension until the Axis lock is pulled open (the same motion you use to unlock an axis knife). If you somehow drilled out a thumbstud blade and attached the coil spring to it, the thumbstud would still be going against a locked Axis bar.
