Is there any difference--other than the numbering--between Benchmade preproduction knives and their production counterparts?

I just got a 770 (carbon fiber axis) and it opens more stiffly (not rough, just stiff) than my production 710. I haven't had a chance to lube it yet, which I'm sure will help.

By the way, the edges are pretty darn good. Looks like BM attacked the dullness problem.

i have a BM stryker prototype, much like a regular stryker but carbon fiber handles, and marked prototype october 98 and elishewitz on the blade - really a solid, well made and fitted knife - looks handmade - but i am looking for info on prototypes and preproduction models too and will em ya if i find anything, and would appreciate it if ya would do the same

Darn it...I lubed it last night with tri-flow and put it through lots of cycles. It's still stiff enough that the Axis lock won't bring the blade back into the handle when I pull the blade out 5 or 10 degrees!

This is kind of a safety issue; one of my favorite things about the Axis lock is that it's safer than liner locks when they're closed.

I haven't messed with the pivot because (1) I don't have a torx set and (2) I thought Axis locks don't rely on friction for resistance--just the springs. Then again, the 770 does look different from my 710--different bushings maybe?

I started a new thread specifically about this problem, since it hasn't gone away after lubing:

I have a pre prod 710 in m2.
