Benchmade Q's on angles

OK I'm somewhat new at this. Some practice, though a long way to go. I've got a Gatco sharpening system (well had to start somewhere). I added medium and fine diamond hones to the Gatco. I've got several Benchmades.

Grip 556

My question is what angles are optimum for these blades. Last weekend I went to 19 degrees on the 943. The others are at Keyman for pimping at the moment.

What angles do I use? These will be users.

Thanks

PS, I did have this posted in maintenance but got no replies. Would appreciate your knowledge.

I tend to stay at about 15 degrees per side, depends on use, if you cut paper, you can drop it to 10 degrees per side.

I go with 40 degrees inclusive. Works for me and its not such a thin edge but still slices just fine.

It is hard to pin down "best". Lots of people use different angles, but not many people are scientific about what they use and how they work. I dare say that the average user asking this question is fine with 20 degrees per side. Some people with better steels go 15 degrees per side, maybe even less for kitchen knives.

I've noticed that almost every one of my Benchmades came from the factory with greater than 20 degrees per side. I finally got a DMT Aligner system and reprofiled many of them to about 20 degrees per side.

I am totally new to Benchmade, but when I inspect the blade with a magnifying glass I think the blade is asymmetrical. The sides are ground at different angles. I suppose the bevel favors the right side.

When holding the blade in your right hand, I find that the right side of the blade is ground at much steeper slope as opposed to the other side. Perhaps 70/30, but as I said before I dont know

They are hand sharpened. And benchmade likes to rock a 20-25º angle on their blades. Angle is preference, I like anywhere from 18-22º but that's just what I've found works for me.

I've noticed that on 1 of the five I've bought recently. I think it depends on how proficient the person is doing the final sharpening. Just like anything, sometimes you just have to train the new guy....

I used my Wicked Edge to re-profile my 940 to about 18 degrees per side and have not noticed any issues so far. On all my others I go 20 degrees per side...mostly to make touch up on my Sharp Maker super easy/fast.
