I was wondering if you good folk out there could help resolve a slight anxiety I'm currently having. I recently have tightened most of the screws on my folders, particularly my BM's. Does this adversly affect the performance and/or working life of the knife? I prefer the action of the 'stiffer' opening but am now worried that I have diminished their capabilities...sorry if the question sounds wierd.

The pivot screw is adjustable so that you can "adjust" it to your own specifications. Some, like you, like a stiffer action. It should have no negative effects on the life of the knife, or the bushings. Don't worry about it and enjoy!:)

nothing wrong with adjusting screws. you can adjust the pivot for blade tension, perfectly fine. also sometimes the screws on the clip may come loose, or something else may. you can put a little loctite (med. strenght) on the first couple threads. that will help keep the screws you want tightened, tightened!!:)

and difficulty in removing the screws in the futire. Simply use a very small amount of loctite and apply a reasonably light amount of hand torque to the screws. Use loctite and force sparingly. Clean out old Loctite residue before applying new loctite...

well said mel!!! :)

I hate to remind myself, but I destroyed a MOD Duane Dieter Automatic that way... I paid full retail, bought when I worked for the government... when I broke it, I had moved on so I could not send it back to the factory. I finally gave it away to someone who could send it in for repairs at a later date...

One caution on BM and other screw assembled knives. Most factories use Locktite or equivlent for assembly. Take a soldering iron with very small tip and heat the screw head before attemping removal/adjusment.

Years ago the early BM folders would loosen the pivot screw after some cycles. I called BM and they stated to use Locktite 242, medium strength on the main pivot screw. Use a very small amount so it does not clog up the washers etc. Adjust tension to your preference and it will stay for many years.

FK

You may wish to review this article about thread locking adhesives.

As long as the blade moves with manual force, it'll be be just fine.
