@Benchmade

I'm looking real hard at the Cabela's exclusive 940-1601. IMO it has the nicest looking handle than any other in the series. But......D2?
I know that's not your call, so here's my question. If, at a later date I purchased another 940 in a more desirable steel and swapped blades, would the warranty still cover this should I send it in with another Benchmade blade in it?
It's not that I mind D2, because I don't. But for the price point I think it should have a Gucci super steel. Plus, as knife nuts, we're always looking to change/enhance/customize and if this is an option, selling the other 940 with D2 would help offset the cost but not if it voids the warranty on x2 knives.
Thanks in advance.

BM's D2 is good stuff, but understand your point.

They're warranty has been known to spill the bounds of its written policy...I'd think you'd be ok, I assume it would be covered ..but don't take that as gospel.

I'm sure they would sharpen it, etc. But I doubt they would do a blade replacement for you. If they did they'd put a D2 blade back in it. To my knowledge they will not put a different blade steel in a model that doesn't come with it.

@Benchmade Jimmy?

That's why I'm going right to the source. It wouldn't be for awhile before I bought another to do the swap anyway and only if it doesn't void the warranty.
If it does I'll just leave the stock blade. Like I said, I don't dislike D2 at all.

The dealer cost of knives from Benchmade are much cheaper than msrp or street price.
Iirc map pricing is somewhere in the 40% area. So they can't advertise cheaper than that. You can ask them if they will reduce the price for you and still make money but not many places do this and what's in it for them if they do? Unless you offer to exclusively buy from them.

In any case I've seen many people blade swap all sorts of brands. If you need to have it in for warranty work you will have to swap the original back on iirc. Generally Benchmade is good with warranty work and they don't care if people disassemble to clean etc.

I did hear alot of qc issues with the cabbelas version. Definitely inspect them and choose one that's perfect in store. Personally I prefer the other 940 variants. The one I kept though was the 940-1 of which I got way below map pricing.

Returning the original blade would be an option, and one I considered, but I was wondering the original question because selling the frankin-Benchmade would potentially recoup some cost but I won't at the cost of voiding the warranty.
Hope this makes sense and clears things up. It makes sense in my head but is sometimes hard to convey via text.

According to their warranty (see Exclusions), modification(s) from the original factory condition will void the warranty. But I've been wrong before. You might consider calling or writing them directly if you don't get a prompt, official response on the forum/s.

Also, I'm with you on the handle/steel combination of this particular model. D2 is fine, but such a handsome handle almost demands a steel upgrade.

I'm hoping for a response today. I posted the original question on Saturday so I'm fairly confident Benchmade will answer now that its Monday.

Great question! While we never recommend disassembling your knife, we will still cover a knife of ours with mixed parts under our warranty. But if you were to ever request a blade replacement, we would default to the blade steel that came on that knife originally.

Thank you for the reply.
That is disheartening but understandable. Thanks again. Pretty sure I'm gonna end up ordering it.
You guys make a great product and your warranty and CS keeps me buying your brand almost exclusively for my high end blades; you guys rock!
