I've been looking for a moderately sized fixed blade for outdoor use. I am not planning to use this knife for chopping trees or clearing brush or anything particularly punishing, nor am I interested in skinning large mammals. I am not at all interested in using this as a weapon. It will mostly be used for general utility, and possibly preparing fish. After a bit of browsing I have found myself drawn to the plain edge Benchmade R+R.

I like the "modified sheepsfoot" setup, and I am impressed with the general design. I am more concerned about amterials and quality than design. Specificly I am looking for any information on the GIN-1 steel and firsthand impressions of the knife. I am also curious about country of origin.

I saw in an older review that there was a general dislike for the sheath, has it been changed at all since then?

I would also welcome any reccommendations on other 3-4" fixed blades in the same price range.

Sorry, meant to put this in the reviews and testing forum. My mistake. Maybe one of the moderators could scoot it over there?

Gingami-1 is good steel in my opinion. Spyderco used to have many knives in their line up made with this steel. In fact Benchmade had a folder called the Panther a few years back made from Gin-1. Back then it was called G-2, and the edge holding was good. This Japanese steel is comparable to 440C.

As far as the Benchmade R+R, I like the knife, but I didn't like the sheath. I don't know if Benchmade has changed it though.

I have the 100 and like it a lot. Removed the PFD lash tab device and replaced it with the small tech-loc. Works well carried either cross-draw or strong side. Bm's new 180 "Outbounder" is a good choice as well.
