I am thinking of buying a Benchmade Rant Bowie or Drop Point for a "knockabout" knife - something that will take a bit of abuse but still have the ability to cut well when needed. Has anyone had experience with these knives - I would appreciate any comments on the pros and cons and which would suit my purposes best the "Bowie" or the "Drop Point"?

I saw the new BM Rant Bowie and it looks like a good knife. From other threads it sounds like N690 is a good steel for blades. I hope you'll buy it and post a review. I'm currently looking at purchasing the 10300 or maybe the ambush. I don't think there's a knife out there made by benchmade that wouldn't be a good buy. :D

I've just recieved a BM Rant bowie and it says on the blade that it's 440C steel, whether BM has changed from N690 or 440C is the same as N690 I'm not sure.

Very nice knife though, should be a good worker knife.

N690 is the Bohler (German) equivalent of 440c - it is very popular with knifemakers in Oz as Bohler is now our only major steel distributor. I don't know which came first for Benchmade the N690 or the 440c.

Actually N690 is Austrian. I checked out the Benchmade website and it appears that N690 is now what Benchmade are using although they mention in their info that N690 and 440c are alike.
