Anyone know what the deal is with the Rant DPT being discontinued? I saw the replacement model and I don't like it nearly as well. I spoke with a guy at Bass Pro and he says his customers have been complaining about the blades breaking and that it's not made as well. The handle has less metal and more plastic. Anyone have any first hand experience. I was just looking to pick up the Rant when they changed it on me.

It is in Benchmade's red class which I beleive is not made in america. Also cheaper materials are used in red class knives. I am not saying they are bad knives and I do not have experience with this knife. I am also pretty sure that the knife does not have a full tang. That would explain the less metal more plastic thing. Hope that helps. I think for only a few bucks more, you could get a better knife.

When the released the new version of the Rant, they advertised it as being made here in the USA; it kind of makes me wonder why it's still considered a Red Class, but whatever. Haven't tried out either the new or old version, but I do feel like there are better options out there for roughly comparable money (perhaps a bit more). Just by looks alone, I'd personally be more inclined to get the old version rather than the new one, just because the new handle looks a little off to me somehow.

Yeah, I'm tracking down an old version from a local dealer. What other suggestions do you all have?

Benchmade has four models called "RANT". All are Red Class. All are 440C steel. Two are being discontinued. The two being discontinued had thinner blades (0.14") than the ones still offered (0.18").

I'd definitely get some first hand experience unless you are familiar with that particular salesman and trust him completely.

Good point knarfeng. I didn't notice the difference in thickness.

The salesman I spoke with just said he has been getting feedback from customers who say the new blades have been breaking. May be a heat treat problem.

By golly elmora is right. The two remaining "Rants" list country of origin as "USA". Sorry, should have been more thorough.

If they are switching from Taiwan to US production you could be right about the heat treat. They might be having problems getting it dialed in.

Good thing about BM is that they will make things right if a blade breaks, but who wants to have a blade break on a hunting trip a couple of days out?

I am a huge 119 fan but as a fighter not a hunter. It is way to big for most hunting chores.
It is an incredible budget fighter though.
