I have a BM940. When I shake it back and forth, it makes a rattle sound--think loose piece of metal inside. I don't think the Omega spring is broken, as it still has plenty of tension on both sides and I can't push the spring down with a toothpick, etc. Any idea what it could be? Thanks.

Probably the stop pin. Place the blade on the pin and see if the noise stops.

On many folders when the blade is partially closed the stop pin will move.If you hold the handle and 1/2 open blade in the other hand then shake the folder the rattling you hear is propably the stop pin.

Wow. That was quick and 100% accuarate. It is the stop pin. Don't know why I could not isolate that noise myself. As soon as I open the blade (so it makes contact with the pin), or squeeze the handle near the pin, it stops making noise. The pin (or the sleeve around it) actually spins. I don't see any way to tighten it, but I doubt it is an actual problem, as opposed to an annouance. There is no external screw, so I guess it would involve taking the handle apart. Anyway, problem solved!! Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of the newer BM knives have pins that tighten with a screw on each side of the pin. The older ones were the same type as those seen in Emerson knives where the pin is retained in place by the pivot and body screw tension. Personally I like a screwed down one better but many of my knives have the loose ones also.

Some say the ones that move wear better because the blade isn't hitting the same spot over and over to make it a flat spot. I don't know how much it matters though. It takes years and years of slamming to beat a flat spot on it to where you can even begin to see it.

Yup, your right. No external screw on the stop pin of the 940. Held tight by the pivot screw and body screw tension (as you said). My pivot is about as tight as I can stand, and the body is tight as a drum, so I guess I will live with it. I just checked and both my Grips (Cabela's and Ritter) do not have an external screw for the pin. However, my 530 does. Wow. Just learned something new. Thanks again.

I have a Buck Mayo Cutback with a noisey stop pin. It took me forever to figure out what it was, so don't feel bad.

Or maybe we should both feel bad...

A little drop of blue loctite on a toothpick and then let it run down the stop pin and into the hole will stop the rattle. Even a drop of super glue will fix it up, if it bothers you enough. I've done this before with excellent results.

Thread resurrection, lol! One of the 710s I recently got had a rattle that I could trace. You fine folks here on BF diagnosed it promptly. Thx so much. It doesn’t bother me now that I know what it is. Although I might try the drop of loctite on the stop pin.

Easy fix: apply a tiny bit blue locktite to the pin sleeve and let sit for 5 min. I bet the rattling sound will be gone.
