Benchmade Rift Thumbstud removal?

Just curious if anyone has removed the Rifts thumbstud. They do not have a torx in them. They just have slots on the outside exterior side of the thumbstuds. If there some tool that fits over the thumbstuds into these slots? I don't want to take pliars too it and scratch it to pieces. The thumbstuds stick way far out and I can not sharpen the knife properly with my belt sander. The other benchmades takes 2 #6 torx to unscrew the thumbstuds to sharpen them properly, but the rift is way different.

Pliers with a cloth should be OK. I did not try it on thumb studs but have done it before on other things.

Well, I guess that is the way I have to go with it. I just called benchmade and they said there is no tool for the rift to get the thumbstuds off, they told me to use pliars:rolleyes: .Really would not like to tear into the thumbstuds like that, but looks like I will have to. I know there is a tool that goes over the thumbstuds and unscrews it, but I guess its only on the tooling in the assembly line.

incahiker, if you put a piece of leather on the pliers, it wont tear into the stud. please dont use the jerkit smiley in the public forums :D

I don't know why Benchmade would tell you to use a pair of pliers. They must have been new.

I don't remember what size, but a smaller 6 point socket fits right over it perfectly to unscrew it. Have to make sure it is 6 point and not 12 point or it won't slide over.

Hey! Thanks for the tip, I knew there had to be some way to get those thumbstuds off. Thank's again for the pics of the rift that you sent me. I do like the rift a lot and it's in my pocket right now. I am just getting used to that horn in the handle that my pinky lands right on top of when gripping hard, I find that rather annoying. Other then that it feels good, especially the carbon fiber. I was surprised that benchmade told me that too. I asked them to double check and they told me again that pliars are the only way to get them off. Kind of odd...

I am going to get those studs out today and get this sucker tree-topping some hairs.

Hey, no problem. Let me know if you want me to find out the exact size socket. It's raining now but if it lets off I will go out to the shop and see. It works perfect so I'm really surprised they told you to use pliers.

I guess my hand must be the perfect size for the Rift. The 'horn' rests right between my ring and pinky finger. It helps to prevent my hand from sliding forward during a stab like the bulge does by the pivot for your index finger. Not a very good explination but hopefully it makes sense.

You're luckier than I am Fla. The Rift is just about the only BM that caught my eye, but when I tried it two years back that bump just felt odd.

Then again, I was in the middle of a growth spurt then. Might as well give it another shot :)

FWIW I was able to use small (6") adjustable cresent wrenches to remove the thumb studs on mine.
