Santa brought me something early this year! Since I've only had this knife for a few hours this will be my initial impressions of it.

Right out of the box the first thing I noticed was the grooved G10 scales. These things really give you a good stable grip because your hand sinks down into the dug out grooves of the G10. The next thing I looked at was the thumb studs. I was a little worried about the thumb studs being too close to the scales for easy opening because on my Grip the studs are higher. This turned out to be a non issue because 1. the grooves in the G10 are angled in and this allows better access to the studs 2. The studs are longer than the ones on the grip. I also like how much blade they stuffed in the scales. There isn't more room for even an extra 1/16 of blade when the knife is closed.

The blade on the Rift is a pretty cool shape. I'm digging the reverse tanto and the blade has a good thickness to it. This is my first knife in 154CM from Benchmade so I wasnt sure how sharp it would come. I tried to shave the hair off my arm and it kind of works but this blade will go to the Sharpmaker pretty soon. The last thing I notices was the liners on the knife. I thought it was all G10 but then I noticed it does have steel liners. The liner on this knife are a perfect match to the scales in shape and color.

I only have one complaint about the Rift...There is no Loctite on the pivot so I assume that means the rest of the screws don't have any either. I just don't understand why companies cant put Loctite on a over $100 blade. I'm not just crying about BM either! My Native4 came with none of the screws Loctited and in a week all of them were loose and starting to come out. KNIVES NEED LOCTITE!

Pic's. Enjoy!

That seems to be a very functional blade, and compared to the Military, it looks to be a good size for EDC. Also, the reverse tanto shape almost looks like a chef's knife, so it won't scare sheeple who can't make a distinction between a pocket knife and a scimitar, and there's another plus for an EDC.

Oh man, I'm already getting ideas...

I love mine i have been carry it for over a year. No problems. and it is a great blade from great steel.

I really like my Rift, as it has a very thin edge for great slicing performance, is pretty ergonomic, is extremely smooth and strong with the Axis lock, and gets extremely sharp with minimal burring (it tested at 61 RC). My M4 Rift had vertical play, but Benchmade called me today to say they replaced the lock and liners to get it to lock up tight and be very smooth. I think it is a good design with a nice blade shape and geometry for excellent cutting ability and the wonderful Axis lock with those nice milled scales. It seems to be a polarizing knife with some people not liking the milled scales or blade shape, but I like the looks and really like the function. With it's thin edge I have found it to be the best EDC from Benchmade that I have tried yet, including the Rukus.

Mike,

Which steel tested out at 61 Rc? I'm assuming the M4 but since you haven't had it long maybe not. That seems pretty high for a stock 154CM heat treat.

The 154CM tested out at 61 RC. Benchmade specs it at 58-61 RC, soi got lucky and got one at the top of the hardness range. I doubt my M4 Rift will test out much harder, at least until I have Phil Wilson re heat treat it to 65 RC. With it's thin edged high hollow grind and 65 RC CPM M4 my Rift should be a seriously good cutter with extreme edge retention and even better sharpness and cleaner edges thanmy 62.5 RC M4 Mule, which is saying something. I am also getting a Spyderco Bradley Folder in M4 that I plan on re heat treating as well. It should be fun to compare the 2 knives, though I am really partial to the Axis lock in the Rift, and I really like the overall design as I think it is just excellent, though the twill carbon fiber and thick liner lock on the Bradley and the nice looking ergonomic handle should be interesting. I'll report the factory hardness readings
on the Benchmade and the Spyderco M4 folders, and other comparisons. Sorry for the thread drift to the 1 in 50 M4 model, but after getting it a week ago with blade play I hounded the poor Warranty ladies at Benchmade and will get it in time for my birthday tomorrow due to their great service, and I should be in for a very happy birthday tomorrow when the brown truck arrives.

Happy Birthday! Hope it is a great one and that you are back to feeling 100%

I am in the process of re-profiling my M4 to about 10 degrees per side. I already worked on my EDC Rift and it is about 15 per side. The M4 is the third knife I have sharpened on the Edge pro but I couldn't wait any longer and hope the two previous ones were enough practice. So far it is looking good just taking awhile.

Sorry to go off topic!

I'm in the process of trading this Rift and I'm having slight trader's remorse:

The thing is, with my small dwarf hands the Rift is about 8-10% too large to handle with total comfort. If it were just a teeny bit smaller I'd guard it with my life, particularly in light of how sick the handle is, but dammit man my mother only breaks the 5' mark if she hops.
Enjoy though; this is a fantastic knife.

The more I play with the knife the more I see everything about it is extremely functional.

It is functional. It is about the perfect size, has a great working AXIS lock (some models are better than others), has a thumb stud that is placed well and works good, has a nice feeling and grippy handle, has a fairly thin grind so it is a great cutter, and just plain looks bad ass (at least to my eyes).

One day I will have to see if I can take a decent picture with all mine lined up. Will also have to show the clips on my user and my new M4 user that I polished and colored. The dark purple and blue goes with the black handle pretty good and doesn't stand out like silver or scratch like the stock ones.

Cell phone pics will work for me!:D
