If I don't go custom, I'll likely get one of these two......more so the Benchmade because it's made in the US.

Any thoughts or alternatives of either profile that are made in the US?

You might look at the Buck Vanguard. Made in USA.

Yeah if you're considering Buck I'd go with one of their many time tested classic American made models.

Benchmade also offers the Steep Country for a few bucks less.

Bradford Guardian 3 or 4 is a good choice in this category, White River Tom Mack hunter is cool too.

I've always been going to get a Chris Reeve Nyala, but still haven't done it. Maybe this year.

Go find a Schrade USA (and USA only) Sharpfinger. It's about perfect.

I had the Saddle Mountain Skinner, so perhaps this applies to the Hunter as well...

The handle is very thin, making it difficult to hold on to. My hands are on the large side, so I have to be careful with handles in general, but the Skinner seemed to have thinner scales than most knives of that size. If you prefer a knife that has a 'meaty' handle the Hunter may not be a good choice.
