Benchmade sharpness issues?

I've been thinking about getting a Benchmade griptillian for my brother, but I've heard that some people get them with very dull blades. Any truth to these rumors?

I dunno about sharpening problems, just picked up a 950 forum knife and the edge was shaving sharp, I've yet to encounter a Benchmade knife that isn't sharp by industry standards.

DooGoon: Normally, no. Right now, yes. I had to order another sharpmaker, first one was damaged in shipping.

I only have one Benchmade knife, a mini griptilian, and it arrived sharper than my ffg Delica 4 out of the box. I was extremely impressed as I had read post about them arriving dull as well, so maybe they fixed the problem?

I got a mini grip for christmas and it was dull as a butter knife. Just saying but I am ok at sharpening so its ok even though I hated the knife

Hmm... is there some quality control issue here? My mini grip came very sharp out of the box... the sharpest factory knife I've ever seen until I got my Mora =)

Based on the posts I'm seeing here, I'm gonna say it's probably just an occasional issue. Lemons happen. I'll go ahead with his griptillian, and even if it did arrive dull, BM would stand behind the product. Thanks for all the help.

I have my doubts about the reports of dull Benchmades when new.
That hasn't been my experience, at all.
Or my brother's.
Or my dad's.
Either we're extremely lucky, or there just isn't this rash of dull knives going around.

Perhaps the dull knives were bought at gun stores, where "new" often means "Pawed over by lots of smelly idiots and put down edge first on a glass counter."
I've seen some nicked and dull knives at gun stores for sure.

I've owned many Benchmades, not one was dull but many were ground horribly...they arrived with obtuse and uneven grinds, but always sharp.

No, it wasn't very sharp at all and was purchased from BladeOps. Its not a big deal though:)

Stabman: Yeah, that'd do it. I spend a lot of time at the local knife shop, and I wince when people put them edge down on glass.

That's unfortunate.
Like you say, not a big deal, but I don't really like having to sharpen the knife right away.
I guess every so often the ball will get dropped though.

No matter how sharp a knife comes from the factory, I can (and do) make it sharper as soon as I take it out of the box.

I also have my doubts about this whole "benchmade sends out dull knives" thing. I have more benchmades than any other company (fourteen in total) and every single one of them has arrived literally shaving sharp. Paper cut tests have shown me that they are sharper than even my spyderco knives out of box.
That being said, even if there was some truth to it. Benchmade offers its lifetime sharpening warranty.
And if you're going to carry a knife all of the time, then at some point you're going to have to learn how to sharpen a blade on your own anyway...

I've had a few Benchmades, and most of them come with obtuse grinds. The newer models (Adamas and Contego) have very nice grinds though and are very sharp. The griptilian I just got probably had a 50 degree or so inclusive edge.
