Is the Benchmade Skirmish tip down only? If so, does anyone modify these for tip up?

Hey blub,

be careful tho. The Skirmish has a heavy blade and may easily swing open in the pocket when tip up. I have a Skirmish too and I dare foresay you would go mightily ouch.

striders are at least as heavy as a skirmish and all of them are tip up.

i know i have seen waved skirmish's so therefore it must be possible.

if i was gonna pack a skirmish (which i certainly wont) it would have to be converted for tip up and it would have to have a better looking/designed pocket clip.

i dont think it would open up in your pocket FWIW the frame lock would have enough tension to hold it in place, and i would imagine it has a detent in there also.

Ahh! That's why it's tip down?

No, I don't think so. It's a frame lock, so there isn;t the Axis mechanism to get in the way of having the clip near the pivot. (Although that doesn't explain why there are a couple of Axis knives that are tip down)

I'm not sure the Skirmish would open in your pocket. But it doesn;t matter anyway. Why they have it tip down, I don;t know, but I prefer all my folders that way. For me (it's just personal preference), I carry my knives in the waistband, and it's easier to grab the top of the knife, pull it up, and let the bottom fall into the palm of my hand. It's ready to open. I don;t understand how people can pull a knife out that is "tip up", and get it into carry position without spinning the knife around in their hand. It's strange to me.

Just curious why a tip up knife has to be spun around in the hand to be in a carry position. You said that when you carry your knife tip down that you spin it around by letting the bottom fall into your hand. Doesn't seem like both directions would need to be spun around to get into the right position like you say.

To me tip up is the only way to go. You slide your thumb into your pocket or waist band right on top of the knife, pinch down and pull it out and the knife is in your hand in the correct position ready to be opened.

I'm not trying to start anything, just curious about what you said.

Yes, I have to agree with you there on tip-up carry. It works for me much better than tip-down.

Maybe I didn;t use the best words to explain. When I grab the top of my knife, my thumb and index finger grab the scales at the blade pivot area. Then, when I pull the knife up, my thumb and finger relax just a tad so that the bottom of the knife, tip down, swings into my palm.... back of the knife against the palm. It is ready to be opened, whether it's a liner lock, axis, auto, or whatever.

What you described makes sense to me. I just never envisioned it because I never did it (having never had a tip-up folder). I mean, even my old Spydercos are both tip down.

The thing is, there are so many nice knives that are tip-up only...... BM Presidio comes to mind. I want to get one, and the tip-up only clip won;t deter me. So eventually I'll finger out how to adjust to it..... and then I'll know what you're talking about.
