What can you men tell me about this knife? As I'm looking at another folder for my collection.
I just received a BM 710 which is pretty cool only that it is a bit small for my hands. O-well my son will probably get that.

Is this BM Skirmish up to rough treatment like boning/caping out deer. Will that frame-lock hold up?

Thanks in advance,

My Skirmish is my GO TO knife for rough and tumble. I've hacked thick plastic pots off trees for planting, used it as a shovel, pry bar, the works. It's tough, it's big, it's cool.

The Skirmish should be fine for bigger hands. If you like the axis lock, you may want to look into the Rukus. The Skirmish is solid and I don't think you'll be concerned how tough it is. I personally don't like the blade to handle ratio, but I've read about a lot of people liking that particular ratio (the blade length is almost equal to the handle length. I pefer a longer handle).

The 710 is small for your hands? You must be one big son of a gun.

Not that tall but not small either. But I do seem to have bigger than normal hands from what I've been told.

The 710 works pretty good in my hand, it's just I would prefer a larger/longer/meatier handle to work with.
Suitable blade length varies for me, with 3-4.5" working well boning-out/skinning deer. Like I said it's more about the handle size & the way it feels in my hand.
I had a policy when searching for my deer rifle, if there was one thing I didn't like it was traded for another. It took me at least 15+ rifles & many $$$ later before I found my pet. I can see this being the same sort of deal, especially as I don't get the chance to handle before I buy. I guess I will just buy/try & trade until I find a few pets that gel, which isn't such a bad thing.
The other fine feature with knives is they don't cost nearly as much as some of my other toys. So I can slip at least one of these puppies into my safe a month without the little women knowing ;) . She doesn't know what goes in & out of my safe, it's a system I've perfected over the years(grin).

Keep the comments coming please

Hmm....let's see....in the past 48 hours I have used my BM Skirmish to make brass shavings....scrape hard/nasty epoxy off of steel tools...cut up abrasive belts...cut oodles of cardboard.....amongst other shop tasks.

It's up to task for me!

The blade in S30V would hold up fine for field dressing, the framelock, I don't know?? I had one, and the blade would fold in on the lightest spinewacks :( very cheesy IMHO!! They should've designed that knife with a lockback like the Spyderco Manix or CS Voyager. Don't get wrong, I love Benchmade's, their axis locks are awesome!!

I own one since a couple of weeks and am still stunned by the knife.
For the size it's lightweight and super easy to carry in the pocket.Even though it's a bit heavier than the BM520 it carries quite a bit easier in the pocket for me,almost as comfortable as the BM710 which itself feels amost as not there after a while. You can fine adjust the pivot to a point so that you got really zero bladeplay but the blade still flings open like there's no tomorrow, really lightning fast to open knife. The handle is big enough for holding it behind the indexfinger choil and still having a four finger grip onto it,while the angle knife/blade to hand stays the same.Gives you a folding kukri feel then.
I would say definitely try it out if on the fence.

The lock should hold well on account of the titanium handle. Titanium has a "sticky" quality against other metals, so it will "grab" the steel of the blade and give you a very secure lockup as compared to a steel frame lock.

I have a mini-Skirmish and I love it.To me the mini is a large folder-3 1/2" blade. If you're looking for a larger folder than a 710 the regular Skirmish is it.Its a heavy duty folder. The only thing I do'nt like is the opening hole is a little small and worse its chamfered so the thumb can slip off the hole.I have no idea why Benchmade does this.I guess a dremel can fix it pretty easy.
About the framelock, mine locks up solid. If I get a framelock or liner lock I check the lock and if there is'nt a good portion of the lock pushing against the tang I would send it back.If a good part of the liner or frame is pushing against the tang and there is no blade play I cant see any reason for a folder to fail a spine whack:confused:

I haven't handled my skirmish recently but I recall that it is a bit thinner but much 'taller' than my 710. (I'm talking about handle, not blade)

Only downside for me is the thickness of the blade and edge....I need good solid daily cutting performance (no prybar stuff for me)...so I got it reground to a hollow grind by my buddy Tom Krein.

Cuts like crazy now!

Re: mini-skirmish

I got one of these for my lady...and she loves it. I really like it too....if it was about 1/4-1/2" longer (both blade and handle) - it would be a perfect knife for me. The regular skirmish is great...but it is indeed quite big...TOO big for some people...and definitely downright scary forthe sheeple. :foot:

I have a Skirmish, though I never use it. It's just too damn big. Too big to carry, too cool not to own. ;) Anyway, mine is excellent, I would say very near custom quality. Great lockup, zero blade play. Just about perfect, in other words. Personally, I really like the blade/handle ratio. I asked Neil on another forum how the heck he'd managed to fit all that blade in there, but all he said was that it had not been easy. :)
