I just got a Benchmade Snody Instigator neck knife in the mail and I'm really pleased with the prospect of using it for a light trail knife. It is just 3.5oz with the sheath and neck cord. The sheath has belt slots in it too, so it can be worn on a belt, or I may just lash it to the right shoulder strap on my pack (I'm a lefty) upside down. The handle is perfect. I had a Becker Necker which I thought was an excellent blade, but the handle was about an inch shy of a good grip. The Instigator handle is long enough for a full five-finger grip with a tad left over for a lanyard. There is a small hole at the end for that purpose. The jimping on the top of the blade ends up right under my thumb and there is a deep finger choil for a really positive grip. All the surfaces are smooth and the edges are "broken" just enough to feel good inthe hand. The choil area has a good bevel. The steel is AUS8, which I like for ease of sharpening and rust resistance-- good economy too.
The blade is a modified Wharncliff. I have some folders with Wharncliffs that I liked, but I didn't know how a larger one would work for me. We had a watermelon that needed to be sacrificed and it is now all in a bowl in cubes-- the blade works great for food prep. It does taper down to a fine point, so I wouldn't do any prying with it, but it will clean small game and make dinner like a champ. It's a keeper!
