Benchmade recently “Upgraded “ their Griptilian’s standard blade steel to S30V. I knew they were using S30V, but wasn’t aware that 154cm will no longer be used in this particular model. I like S30V but 154cm is my favorite steel because it has a nice balance of toughness, edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening. How do you feel about this change by Benchmade?

Eh, kinda wished they'd gone to S35 when they were upgrading.
But S30 is decent, apart from the sharpening situation.

For me, this kind of thing largely comes down to value. For $100 I think a Grip with 154CM is, frankly, pretty damn pricey. For $105 with S30V it's still not an amazing deal, but it's much more in line with the rest of the market. Now if the Grip with 154CM was $75 and the S30V pushed it to $105, I'd take the 154CM all day every day.

S30V has come a long way. The Knife industry has gotten better with production and heat treatment. Crucible has gotten better at making it. Niagara has gotten better at rolling it and there is now more information about using diamond stones for it and plentiful options for folks.

My point is, this isn't the same s30v from 15years ago. It's gotten better, less chippy and will outcut 154cm no problem.

I swear I didn't read this before leaving my comment above. Funny we both came to the exact same conclusion. We should start a consulting service. :D

You’ll have no problem finding a second-hand Grip in 154, but I’d opt for the 20CV mini anyways.

I LOVE the mini grip in 20cv. Great little knife that I find myself carrying more than many other more expensive blades. My kid started asking to use it so much I ended up buying one for him so he would leave mine alone.
