Benchmade does make some good knives, but it is debatable whether or not they are considerably better. Spyderco makes great knives as well. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one from either company.

That's why I posted this...it is such a hard choice. Spydie Lum is and awesome tactical folder...and it's about the same price as a BM.

If you're looking at both Spyderco and Benchmade and want a tactical folder for edc, I recommend:
  • Spyderco Military
  • Spyderco Wegner
  • Spyderco Gunting
  • Benchmade 710
  • Benchmade 806D2

All of the above should be in the $100 range.

There's nothing wrong with the Spydie Lum Tanto. It is a neat knife. It just isn't my personal favorite.

If you want a pure tactical knife, I would recommend the Spyderco Civilian. Its not particularily good for other tasks, though.

Good luck!

If you're looking for a tanto then go for the 722 if a tanto is not suitable then an AFCK would do you just right.

I would also tend to go with either the 710, 806 or 730. I've found the Axis lock to be extremely strong and safe. The 730, at a slightly smaller size is a great go-anywhere/do-anything knife.

I just bought a BM 710 with the M2 High Speed steel, it is one bad mama-jamma. I considered the Emerson Commander as well but decided on the BM because of the better steel, the far better Axis lock, and the far cheaper price.

Excuse me, Rob, but since when has "tactical" directly translated to "combat".

To me a true "Tactical" knife is something that can handle most any situtation I throw at it, including but hardly limited to combat.
Example of my tacticals:
Benchmade 805 TSEK Axis
Spyderco Chinook
Becker Combat/Utility 7

I'm beginning to worry about all the raving of "tactical" this and "tactical" that, folks are forgetting to think about what "tactical" really means.

Anyway, maybe I'm in the wrong, but a knife that is suited only to one purpose hardly seems Tactical to me, inflexible is more like it.

How about the 805 Axis TSEK? I have it and the AFCK and I find the TSEK blade more generally useful. Same frame, scalse, and Axis lock. - Lee

Also the TSEK feels far better in my hand than the Axis AFCK and doesn't have that god awful BT2 coating.

Crazy Nicky :

I own 27 Spydies, and would recommend them to you in a "New York" second ;) But You should really do some "hands on" with the knive(s) you're thinking of buying.

Tell'er Al Treat sent ya'!;)
