Benchmade Thumbstud

So I know that in recent posts, i have thrown some dirt in the general direction of Benchmade. Well, I have come here to publicly apologize. I just received in the mail yesterday a Benchmade 707 Sequel. This is by far the classiest edc I have owned. (previously had one, sold it because i couldn't get it sharp. New one came dull as rock, but the Sharpmaker I also recently bought changed that). Any way, not gonna do a review on it, there are a few out there. But i did have a question about the thumbstud. It seems as if it is removable (and it is, i did it). But I was curious as to why? Are there different colored thumbstuds that can be purchased and replaced? Then that got me thinking, what about a different colored backspacer? If any of you know the reason for the thumbstud being removable, i would love to hear it. Again, i apologize to the fine people at Benchmade!

I take the thumbstuds off of all of my tip up carry knives and replace them with a ziptie so they can be waved

Cant think of another reason

No sure why it is removeable, my guess would be that it's different than the ones that are pressed in; think ZT. When I sharpen a Benchmade, I usually remove the thumbstuds as they only get in the way.

For some sharpening systems out there it's easier if you can take the thumbstud off of a folder blade.

Hmm, well I think it would be a good marketing idea if they were to make different colored thumbstuds available. They could color them like the backspacers of the osborne knives. i think that would add a little personality and customization to the knife! :)

I'd hate to be a shaman and resurrect this post but I can't seem to find any info on whether or not I can buy colored thumb studs for my 940?? Or do I just ship them to someone who can anodize them a certain color for me ?

They are not Ti so they won't anodize.
I wouldn't doubt there are some aftermarket thumbstuds out there. Check in with some modders and see what they can do for you.

I'm a little confused. For the record, I don't sharpen my own knives..well used to. Anyway..how does a thumbstud get in the way?

It depends on the geometry on the knife, system, and edge. A lower angle puts the stone closer to the studs, and some thumbstuds are designed poorly so they are overhanging the cutting edge, so that low angle can take part of the studs right off. I've had this happen with a handful of knives with particularly prominent studs.

If you freehand the risk is lower, because you can change the angle of approach, but if you use a guided system they can get in the way because you can't change the angle of approach.
