Benchmade "Vex" Red Line

I realize that Benchmade has discontinued their "Red Line" series. If I understand correctly, these were knives made in China, using 8Cr14Mov steel.

My question is? I have come across NIB Benchmade "Vex" for $28.95. Granted, we are only talking about 30 bucks here, so, whats really to lose, right? Do any of you own these? Are they any good??

I was thinking about buying 3 or 4 of these and giving some as gifts.

Opinions???

Thanks...

I just got a NIB Vex tanto with thumbstud yesterday. Based on the price you found it for I assume it is from the same place.

I am very impressed with it so far. The lockup is tight and the deployment is very smooth. I didn't realize that was a recurve until I got it and was initially disappointed, but it is really growing on me. The only thing that I am not to keen on is the pocket clip. It is really long. Also the knife is kinda heavy for a <3.5" blade. I couldn't care less about weight, but figured I would mention it.

Overall for a knife that around 30 bucks it is a pretty good deal. I would recommend it to anybody looking for a knife in that price range.

For the price point the Vex is a good buy and was among the best of the Red Class Benchmades. Yes, a little heavy but with a rounded spine, good clip, G-10 scales and both a recurved drop point and tanto blade...for $30 is better than a lot of knives costing twice as much. Plus Benchmade will honor the knife under both warranty and LifeSharp services. Heck, get two.

I used to own one, and my 13y.o. currently own one. My only gripe was with it being a right-handed liner lock. Seriously, that was my only gripe (I'm a southpaw).

Well...

For the price, I did order two. I also ordered a "Benchmade" Harley Davidson "Levitator" money clip knife. Price for the HD was $25.95, seemed like a pretty good deal to me. S/H was $7.95 for all three knives.

I've had one for over a year. The quality compared to other BM's I have is good, it's well finished, and I believe it was coming out of the same manufacturer of the Spyderco Chinese knives. It points out that when things are held to specification, you get a good item. Much of the price difference in knives is labor - how much does it cost, how much is there in shaping that particular alloy blade?

It handles fine, grippy enough to keep from dropping it, as time goes by, it's developing a patina in the G10 which is slicking up. The nitrided blade resists scratching to a much higher degree than simple brush finished steel, and the designers chose to reduce the amount of "dye" in the treatment, leaving it a softer gray color. Nitriding itself doesn't materially change color, it's added - nobody spends money for it when treating crankshafts or other parts.

The liner lock works securely, I have no issues with the blade rocking and opening the lock. There is another liner on the unused side, and that contributes to much of the extra weight and thickness. I've disassembled mine to see if it could be eliminated, it would take some modding to capture the screws to hold things together. However, that result was all good to me, lighter and less bulk when clipped in the pocket. It then felt normal in the hand compared to other knives like framelocks, etc.

The pocket clip is interesting in that it has finger detents stamped into it, which reduces the obtrusiveness of the clip. It makes it a lower profile in use, and reducing some hot spotting if that might be an issue.

I haven't gotten much reaction to it using it in public, just another knife for most folks. The shape of the blade and grip are utilitarian, and the drop point with flat grind cuts well. I keep it in the EDC rotation, and still pick it out some days in competition with knives like a Boker CLB M-type.

I still think it's a better knife that the one Spyderco came up with at the same time, if only for the nitrided blade that still looks the same as the day I bought it. But - I know where that could lead, and it's really a matter of personal taste. At the prices being posted in this thread, get one while you still can.

Just found this thread. Hope you grabbed one. Just found one and only one listed on eBay for $90. Traded for one over Instagram. I think this will be a cool blade and something that you could turn over to a benchmade collector down the road. Cheers

I think I got one of these cheap on a whim years ago at a Excaliber store closing.

Not a bad knife, but never got carried and it's still up somewhere in my knife collection.

That's good news for me, since I have one to sell, but anyone who pays $90 for a Vex is the kind of person P.T. Barnum was talking about.

If one of you could email me and tell me where you guys got those if they are still available for that price that would be nice.

I had one and was not particularly impressed. It has got a nice blade shape, that's right. But seriously: the blade and the liners look like made from the same stock: you must be kidding me! So no wonder the blade looks too thin while the handle looks and feels too thick for a knife of that size! I do have a problem with BM discontinuing good knives, but Vex is certainly not one of them, from my point of view.

That was over a year ago for a discontinued Red Class knife, so I doubt you'll find many, if any at dealers. If you don't succeed in finding one, send me a message.
