Benchmade warn 583-1

I have one... I got it a few weeks ago, and have since had it modified by a professional grinder here. It came with a very very fine tip, which bothered me, in a knife billed as a Hard Use utility knife, so I had a better, more utilitarian edge profile put on it, and had the tip "thickened" a bit to make it a little sturdier. I like it much much better this way.

disliked it due to the tanto... now like it without the tanto ^^^^ awesome modification..

Ok so I just got this knife in the plain edge, no coating. I just broke the fuxxxing tip off with light duty and I'm not happy at all. It cuts really well and I like the action but there's no excuse for the tip to break. Anyone have experience doing returns to Benchmade? I bought it at the Shaver And Cutlery Shop in Oakland CA, an excellent knife shop, and was pretty excited about it until now. I'm kind of tempted to say "fxxk the warranty" and just re-grind it. Opinions, suggestions?

What were you doing to break the tip? Knives aren't meant to open cans of paint. I have some fairly fine tipped knives and if you use the knife as a knife for cutting things you should be ok.

Every once in a while there can be a flaw in the metal or a crack from heat treat or even brittle steel from over heating during grinding, but it is rare. You can see what Benchmade says but they will probably tell you it was being abused. If you like the knife then have it reground like the above knife. I like it a lot better than the stock tanto blade anyways.

It broke on a piece of wood. No I was not opening a paint can or prying up nails, come on I know better than that. I was whittling hardwood and made a circular motion to carve out a hole/indentation, and it snapped right off, not much more than a 16th of an inch but the tip nonetheless.

Benchmades warranty department is pretty darn good. Anything I've ever need they've fixed for me. I think that if you explain how the knife was damaged that they will repair the tip for you. Depending on how it looks they will probably take the tip down 1/16th an inch or so and make a new tip. If this will bother you, you could always have them put a brand new blade on it for $20.

Actually uncoated blades are $25 and coated blades are $35. Does the Warn come in an uncoated blade? I think all the pictures I have seen have been coated?

Necromancing this thread just to say that I am a much less stupid knife owner these days, and also to follow up that Benchmade totally took care of me with the tip and with the Axis lock when the spring got bojangled. I lost that Warn some years ago, probably to a seat belt, and though I looked high and low I have not been able to replace it. In its place I got the standard Barrage version of the same size & shape but lost it last year, also likely to a seat belt. I've decided to never ride on the passenger side of anyone's car again because I can't afford to lose the Vector 496 I just bought! :D
