Alright guys I'm going to give Benchmade a shot. I haven't ever considered them before. I don't know why I just don't think I'll like them.

But then again, I said the same of spyderco :o.

Ok so I'm going to do one of these and I'd like to know which ya'll would do.

Choice one: get a griptilian and a mini griptilian.

Choice two: get the folding adamas.

Lemme have it..

Depending on what you plan on using it for, a mini griptilian is a safe bet.

I find the ergonomics perfect, the steel is pretty decent, I like the blade shape, it rides nice in the pocket, light weight, strong axis lock, and a great warranty behind it. There's nothing I don't like about it, to be honest. It makes for a great EDC folder.

Used for edc and sometimes heavier use. I figure if I've got it why not use it!
And if I went for the grip scenario I would wither get two minis or a mini and a regular.

Another FYI I have no problems whatsoever carrying a large knife.

Well those are 2 good choices. I personally have the 551 Griptilian and the 950 Rift. I love them both.
The two you listed are completely different animals. The griptilan is a great edc, light weight and 154 steel which is easy to sharpen and holds a decent edge.
The Adamas is a beast of a knife that is much heavier, super stong knife but very easily edc'd if you like a heavier knife. the D2 is great steel for the hard use it's intended for. I guess it depends on the intended use. If your looking to get your feet wet with Benchmade, perhaps the Griptilian is a good choice.

And I guess I should preface a bit more:
I have gift cards for bass pro from Christmas. Obviously I'm getting knives or a knife. Problem being their selection is terrible. I have Kershaws and don't like SOG designs at all. That being said Benchmade was my decision.

See if you can go to a local store and check both out in person.

You might find the mini too small, or the regular too large in person.

Good luck.

I've been looking but I don't have any knife stores that I know of in my area. Central New York :(

Hard to go wrong with a Grippie. My pref is the D2 model from Cabela's. Holds an edge better than CM154 but takes a bit longer to sharpen.

I carry my Mini Grip far more than my full size Grip. The rounded handles on the full size Grip do make it a bit bulky in pocket. That said, if you don't mind the larger footprint of the full size Grip, it is definitely a more comfortable knife in hand.

Why limit yourself?! Haha

Seriously though, I love the Mini-Grips and I have much larger hands than the average Joe. If I'm going out on a serious trip or something, I'll carry something a little bigger but, for EDC I just want something small that cuts really well. I just got the Doug Ritter Mini-Grip in M390 and I absolutely love it!

I have a 556 mini-grip, and I don't like it. I don't like the handle material, or the length of the handle.

I have a 531, which I adore. It's a featherweight that slices like a machine. Being a featherweight, I don't tend to use it as hard as it could be used. It's rough on pant pockets though, so I don't carry it too frequently these days.

940 Osborne. Get it, and be done. It's not my favorite knife, but it spends the most time in my pocket.

BassPro shops in Utica and Auburn. Dick's and Modells are in Central NY.

BTW, how big are your hands? If they are average size the Mini Grip will be fine. But, if they are large the knife will not fit you well. The full size Grip would be better (or a Delica or Endura :D).

Wanna sell your mini grip? PM me if so.

No 'wrong' choice here.

If you have larger hands you'll prefer the full size Grip and Adamas.

Check out the KnifeWorks exclusive RSK MK1 Griptilians. Upgraded larger blade in M390. I gave one as a gift.

It's easier for me to say which Benchmades not to get than to get cause there is only a few I don't like. Don't like the Barrage models ( have had problems with everyone I've ever had) and don't really care for the Volli though it is pretty good de-assisted. The Barrages suck de-assisted. So IMO would just avoid the assisted models. Their Auto's are excellent though in my experiance.

581, 710, 940 and 950 seem to all be favorites here.

My personal favorites are the 581, 890 and 913.

Today I went retro and I'm carrying my old Benchmade Leopard.

I haven't found a task my Adamas can't handle, for what it's worth. I find myself carrying it most days even though it does take up substantial pocket real estate.

I find the mini-grip has too little handle for its size. The big one is probably a good choice if you don't have size restrictions. Though the Griptillians are known for their good blades paired with rugged, inexpensive handles, not for general... niceness.

As for the Adamas... I wouldn't say that one is representative of Benchmade as a whole, and there's nothing subtle about it. If you want to give the brand a fair shake, I'd avoid the extremes like that.

If you're anywhere near Kingston NY, Gander Mountain carries BM, if you're near Dutchess County, Warren Cutlery in Rhinebeck has a pretty good selection of knives. Last time I was there they carried BM ( call first). And as someone mentioned Pro Bass carries BM.

Now back to your choices.... I'm in the minority , but when I got my Grip, it was one the biggest letdowns. I couldn't get past the cheap hollow handle. I sold it pretty quickly.
If you want something along the lines of a full grip , try to find a Bone Collector. They're discontinued but you can find them on the web.

Oh the Adamas is a big heavy knife , but it's a much more satisfying knife than the grip ( just my opinion)

Here's the Bone Collector
