Hello. I'm new to the forum. I'm looking at a couple of different knives. I guess my question is.... What is so good about Benchmade? I have never bought a knife over $60. A they worth it? I don't want any flaming, just everybody's experiences with them (good or bad).

Thanks
Lee

Whether any knife is worth over 60 dollars or 600 is up to you. Are you getting a better product with Benchmade, yes. They use a few different steels, all of which will provide outstanding service. If you pay for an axis lock knife you will get an extremely strong, ambidextrous, and extremely easy one handed opener and closing knife. I own many brands and for the money I feel Benchmade products are worth every penny. With a minimum of care it is the type of product that can last a lifetime and send it on to your kid and he can use it. It is that well made. Still, is it worth the hundred bucks. If you lose things easily, probably not. If you want a sharpened pry bar, probably not. They are my favorite production folders. I love my spyderco's, my sebenza, etc. but one of my axis lock Benchmades usually is what ends up in my pocket. Last piece of advice, try them out see for yourself and please don't buy a knife because its sharper than the other one. You will dull it and you can easily learn to sharpen it as sharp as you desire for your purposes. I read all the time about out of box sharpness and while this is desirable, it is also completely blown out of proportion. Buy a good, or great, knife and then take the same amount of time and learn how to sharpen it properly and whatever knife you choose will work fine for you. As for me, put me down as a positive vote for Benchmade products.

That all I'm really looking for. Something well made and that will last. Thanks pedropcola.

Lee, I just bought my 1st Benchmade knife, a 12800 Gaucho. This is the 1st knife that I have paid over $100 for. Like you, I wanted to see what is so great about a Benchmade. What made me decide on this model was it's extremely light weight and the Axis lock. Turns out the knife weighs almost 3 times what it is advertised at. I contacted Benchmade and they confirmed the web site is wrong. They offered to buy the knife back from me. So, I have a knife that I wouldn't have bought but I have to give their customer service department a thumbs up. The fit and finish on it are very good. I am going to give this knife a few weeks to impress me before I pass final judgement on it. The knives I usually carry are D2 bladed Ka-bars, Mcustas, CRKT carbon fiber M-16s and titanium S-2s.

One thing to be aware of is the 4 Benchmade "classes"

Blue
Red
Black
Gold

You can see more about them on at www.benchmade.com.

Most important is that the Red are made overseas; the others are made in the USA.

The Red class has some knives worth owning - - but there is some very good competition from other companies which are also manufacturing overseas.

The USA made Benchmades are simply superb tools, in my view worth what they sell for.
In build quality, execution, & design. The Axis is probably the best lock available on any folder;
certainly one of the best.

Benchmade has a reputation for making a quality long-lasting edge knife in a variety of styles. All they do is make knives.

Howdy, welcome to BF,

I think the axis lock folder is best if you can hack someones first and last name scrawled all over the blade (tacky IMO).

I don’t get you? Do object to the authors name on a book? I just don’t see this as a major (or even minor) issue in the decision making process.

I got my first Benchmade knife around this time last year, it was an Axis Lock 710. Since then I've added another five to my collection.

I have to agree with the others, they make some of the finest production knives I have ever seen.

BTW they make excellent liner and frame locks too...

I have had Benchmades for probably the last 10 years or so. They make a great product. Have yet to have any failures, the axis lock holds up great. Don't forget that you can also get a Griptilian or Mini- Griptilian that has an axis lock for between 50-80.00 or so. The newer ones have 154 steel. And these are definitely not heavy. Either size makes a great edc knife.

Whatever you do, don't buy a Benchmade 710.

Most other folders pale in comparison, so you will find yourself buying fewer and fewer knives.

I'm sorry but that statement has to be qualified. I have a practically mint condition 710HS that sits in its box. Its just plain too big for my use. I got it because its highly recommended on BF, but I wish I'd had a chance to handle it first, since I wouldn't have bought it.

If a 4 inch folder isn't to big then its a great knife.

I just bought a 710 - yesterday! Love it. But - too big? I almost didn't get it because it was so small! But I wanted something I could wear in a business suit, since the Rukus is a bit much for slacks. The 710 is lightweight and slender when closed, but has a decent blade length to be real world useful.

I'm just under 5'10", I'm no "big guy," but I find anything 3.75 or shorter just looks like a little bitty knife to me. I bought a Dominator (3.65" blade) because an assisted opening titanium framelock flipper with a full flat grind was too sexy not to have... but its such a cute little thing I almost never carry it. I call it stubby behind its back... :D

Wegner Pro Hunter at a listed 3 and 5/8" carries like a little knife but the geometry of the hande gives it more "reach" than the Dominator and so it hangs out with the bigger boys. Mine's probably mad at me now though since the 710 kind of knocked it out of the formal wear EDC rotation... :rolleyes:

Is the 710 you are talking of half serrated? Is that what you mean by HS?

Benchmade has quickly become my favorite brand, I don't have alot of money, so it is a little harder for me to buy Benchmades, but I save up so I can have the best. You have to get a BM that you like and you will know why everyone likes them so much. Get a cheaper BM like a Pika, Ambush, Griptilian, or a Monochrome and give BM a chance, you probably will still buy other knives, but BM will be on your favorite list.

Its the one with M2 tool steel. I thought it was designated as HS for High Speed, but I didn't look it up before posting. It has a plain edge.

If you buy one Benchmade you will be hooked. I still love all my folders, but BM made a great product. The 710 has alot of blade but it carries smaller than you think. You won't regret spending the dough on a Benchmade. The HS does stand for high speed as in M2 High Speed Steel. It a tool steel that BM doesn't use anymore, hardened to 62 HRC I believe. If you find a 710 HS or HSSR (High Speed Steel, partial serrated) pick it up and buy it.

Yes, it's the designation for High Speed.

(M2 is a specialty tool steel used in high-performance applications;
rarely is it used for knife blades.)

i have an auto stryker. i love it. mom got it for me for christmas one year and i've put it through some serious roughness.. i've cut small guage braided steel cable with this thing.. few very small nicks but nothing that couldnt be brought out with a few swipes on a stone. 154cm is one of my favorite blade steels however i'm still experimenting with differnt types.. i got an ontario rat 1 on the way right now as we speak.. another aus 8 to match my crkt m1 lightfoot.
