I'm so happy.:):):) I was able to place my order yesterday for the 49-01. When I ordered it from Benchmade I was told there were still about fifty left so order fast. But the good news gets better. I was told they will be ready to ship SATURDAY. With next day shipping I will have mine :pMonday or Tuesday:p at the latest.:D

:p :p :p

Hi Chung San,

How much is the Benchmade 49-01 ? I might be interested in it too.
Are there any pics that I can see ?

Thanks and have fun w/ your new balisong,
Joe

Actually I was told BM shipped few 49-SPL today and the balance will be shipped next week. They also told me that 49-01 won't be shipped until end of Oct and 49-02 is scheduled to ship on 1/15/02.

You might by two Chevy Cavaliers for what a Chevy Corvette cost, but you still wouldn't have a Corvette. Both are great cars. Dobruski and Benchmade balisongs are both great balisongs, but the American Kris is at the top of my list.

:) Actually when I talked to them yesterday the woman told me the 49-01 would go out Saturday or Monday.

A 49-02:confused:, please tell me more.

I was also told that the 49-01 wouldn't be shipping until near the end of October. If it ships next week, I'll only believe it til it's flippin' in my hands!

I just have a question about the kris balisongs. What is the appeal. I have never flipped one, and in fact only own one balisong at present, a BM 42. I have seen the kris blades for years, but always wondered what the attraction was. Do they make a really cool pattern as you flip them in front of a tv screen, or do they just look nifty in general?

They're just Nifty...

Impractical, Improbable, Unconventional, Irresistable, Traditional, Cerimonial, and purely Artistic.

Unless anybody else can think of a use for a Kris that that suits it's shape?

Oh, yeah....

Inspirational, unintensional, incomprehendable, improvinisational, inedible, anti-fungal, pro-anti-dis-establishmental.... and any other "le" or "ism" you want to give...

The first time I saw a balisong, I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Then, when I saw the Pacific Cutlery kris, I said to myself, I got to get me one of them. But, they were way too expensive for me back then. So, I guess I just like the way the blade looks. Plus, the fact that it's a balisong gives it double pleasure for me. Now that the price is a little more in my grasp, it's still a pretty penny to cough up, I have no choice but to secure one. Yeah the blade style is impractical for my everyday use, but a good balisong artist will know his own capabilty with his tool.

Guys, it's $600. Unbelievable price. Let's sell one of our kidneys and get one of them.

Joe

Kidneys cost more than that. I should know, I'm a recipient of a transplant from my brother. But, if you're willing to give one up, I'm sure there's plenty of people who would be glad to have a new kidney, maybe even one that loves balisongs.:)

If I have to explain you won't understand.:D

Remember that its not a production balisong, but a custom. The blades are hand sharpened with a hollow grind. It has cocobolo wood inlays and let's not forget the fact that it is a kris. Again if I have to explain I guess you won't understand either. There are enough that do understand though. The twenty five 49-SPLs that were made sold out in 24 hours. Fifty of one hundred 49-01s are allready sold.

ChungSan, I think you are wrong...

If these were real customs, then you would have the option of "options".

This is a production line.
A very limited production line.
They could easily pump out another 100 if they wanted to.

For this to be a custom line, then you should have options of insert materials, handle composition, and blade profiles.

Just because they are hand ground, doesn't make them custom. All of Pacific Cutlery stainless models were hand ground, but the ones with "options" were called customs, and fetched a higher dollar.

All balisongs must be assembled by hand, and have some hand finishing, 42's included.

Let me know if I'm wrong, but the handles are "pumped out" on a CNC machine, and although the programing takes a while (and $$$), once it's dialed in, you can churn out as many as you have steel for.

It's not like each handle is machined out on a milling machine, per order, by someone who puts their own blood, sweat, and tears into your blade.

The Benchmade 49-spl is a very sweet bali.
I think that I'll send my $$ to Brazil and get a real custom.

(You equated Dobruskis to Chevy Cavaliers, and Benchmades to Corvettes, but at least you are getting a true custom knife with love put in, instead of another number off the production line...)

Talking about custom balisong, I am doing a project on it now. I did a design and a bladesmith agreed to make it.

It is NOT the Gemini. It will have a nice 5" heat blued high contrast damascus blade, titanium base handle (satin polish) with blued damascus buttons, adjustable stainless steel pins and some surprise handle features from the maker.
It will be done is about 3 months.

So, please wish me luck. It is my first design.

Thanks,
Joe

Well put tonyccw.

Blade_420 my comparison of a Dobruski to a Benchmade was off. I suppose a better way to put it would be that the Benchmade balisong is a status mark in the balisong world. Dobruski has made his mark as well, just not as big of a mark as Benchmade. Let's just say after spending all of my money on the kris that I hope to have enough left for a Dobruski in the near future.

Well, lucky for me I don't care much for that blade, looks like a sharpening nigthmare to me, I know there is suppose to be some magical or mystical reference to the waves in the Kris but I don't get it...and on this one, from the pic above, the tip looks unfinished to me? like they said ok...that's long enough and sort of stopped, it'd be nicer with a more narrowing blade out to the point, or is it just me? :)

Gary:
I agree with you totally.
That's the ONLY thing that's been keeping me from shelling out the cash for one.
I think that if i'm going to shell out that kind of cash it better look perfect, and to ME the tip of that blade doesn't look finished, but hey that's just my opinion.
