Before I get to the knives, let me detail my requirements, as they are somewhat unusual.

In August 2008 I became a hemiplegic, with my left side paralyzed, and I’m in a wheelchair. As a result, I can’t reach into pants pockets, so I carry everything in a travel vest. This impacts my choice of knife, as it has to be a one handed opener, and have a clip so I can have easy access to it from a vest pocket.

Now I have always admired the Buck 110, an American classic. Before I got sick I got a 112 (I have small hands, another factor that influences knife choice). Afterwards, I added a one-arm bandit so I could open it, but the lack of a clip and the weight means I can’t really carry it.

The 110 is one of the most copied knives ever, and in my case function really has to dictate what I carry. I recently found out about the Benchmade 13150, which is very close to the 110, has a good weight and a clip, and the easy opening Axis lock to boot.

Some pros and cons: obviously, it has all the features I want, in the size I want. On the negative side, it is very expensive. I generally try and keep my knives at $100 or less; my edc is a Spyderco Native CF, which I got on an outrageous closing out sale for $90, and I love. Also, on the 13150, I can’t stand the HD on the blade; I don’t ride a bike and I’m not into corporate logos. And I’m not crazy about the D2 (hard to sharpen on my Sharpmaker), but I can live with that.

So what do you think? How good is this knife? Is it worth the heavy investment? Are there any other choices with the features I need?

By the way, there is a plastic version of this knife from Benchmade, which is a lot cheaper, but it doesn’t look like a 110, and has the logos all over it, so that’s out.

My thanks, as always, to all the smart folks on this forum.

I cannot speak to the Mini - but I do have the full size version (13100) and I love the knife!!

The blade shape is very reminiscent of the 110 (the two are side by side in the photo). I have big hands and the mini would have cut into my palm with extended use.

The D2 is toothy once you sharpen - so I try to stay away from the ceramic rods and use a conventional two grit stone.

It cuts like a champ, and the action and lock are as smooth as you can expect from Benchmade.

Some do not like the skulls machined into the G10 inserts - they do not bother me. I carry without the clip, and when the Harley guys are in the office I get them drooling all over it.

Have you considered an Auto conversion of a 110. Some states have laws that allow folks to carry automatic knives with the proper documentation from a physician. Working the back lock might be a wee bit tricky, but, at least the toughest part of the equation would be handled by the spring opener. You could have a nice wet molded sheath made with a clip.... on second though it seems like a bit of trouble to get all that done, but...hey, it's an option ;)

Hope you find what you are looking for
