Is it durable or will it peel right off? Is it more like DLC or Teflon coating? Just curious because I'd like to buy a 710 with black coating to further protect it from rust.

First off, D2 isn't very rust prone at all. It's 1% away from being considered a stainless steel, so far all intents and purposes it is a stainless steel. It actually has more free chromium than some "stainless" steels like ZDP-189. Zdp has 20% chromium, but most of it is tied up in carbides so in my experience D2 is more stain resistant than ZDP189.

As for the coating, it's tough - but it's no DLC.

I have three Benchmades with coated blades. The only one that has any visible wear is a Griptilian Tanto, right on the crease where the tanto tip grind begins. That's to be expected in a Tanto. Aside from that, the coating has held up well on all my BMs.
