Couple of questions here:

1) What are the relative merits and disadvantages of M2 and D2 steel?
2) How well has Benchmade treated their M2 and D2 steel?

Thanks,

Matthew

Someone named "alligator" posted a comparison chart on his web page, but now I can't find it. His conclusion was that M2 had great toughness and edgeholding and was higher in both than D2. I don't know which one is better for corrosion. I'm guessing D2 since lots of makers leave it uncoated.

you're talking about one of my favorite drool sites, lots of great eye candy at
www.zvis.com
gator97 really does a nice job and has a great collection of cool stuff, guns, knives and a fast car. If it had pretty women it would be heaven.
The chart is under the 710hs review IIRC

Sorry to dredge this thread up from two months ago. I figured that by now, the people who own both the 710HS and the 806D2 might be able to make a meaningful comparison between Benchmade's use of these two steels.

Anybody?

Thanks,

Matthew

I've had both, carry the 710HS in M2 EDC, it is sweet.
BM did an awesome job on the heattreat.

I don't own a BM in D2 but I have a Mini AFCK II in M2. The heat treat and temper in this one leaves something to be desired. Won't hold an edge as well as it should.

got a axis AFCK D2, and a M2HSS AFCK also, like both, really cant see a diff in edgeholding/corrosion resistance/etc, but that D2 AFCK is the sharpest knife i own, bar none, and i worked on the edge very little from the factory...........was suprised it was SOOOOO sharp

either is good, i personally guess i like the D2 better though, just seems to take a better edge (just a LITTLE)

I just recently aquired a full size old model AFCK in M2 steel. I am amazed at how scary sharp I am able to get this knife! Much sharper than any ATS34 bladed AFCK I have owned(and I have owned several). I will let you know about the edge holding, as I have really cut little with it. I do plan on giving it a good workout soon.

The AFCKs somewhat steep edge angle/ grind has been discussed in detail in the past. Both my very well used ATS34 and M2 blades show very little difference in sharpness. But for sure the M2 requires more time on the stones! Perhaps the current Axis D2 models have a thinner edge profile, a factor in relative sharpness of a blades edge.

D2, depending on ones source, is as close to a stainless as any tool steel will get, with about 12% chromium content. M2 has no where this amount. Ergo the black protective coating.

I too would like to hear detailed reviews of the Axis D2 AFCK.
