Now that Benchmade has released limited edition knives with satin D2 blades, maybe we can get them to do an uncoated 806D2 Axis AFCK? Camillus doesn't seem to be having many rust complaints with it's D2 CUDA Maxx blades. I'd even pay a little more for the satin finish. What do you guys think?

I know it's not the same as getting it from the factory, but another solution is that you can remove the black coating yourself & put a satin finish on. It just takes fine-grit sandpaper & elbow grease.

Thanks for the tip, fishface5. Actually I'm refinishing a BK&T Magnum Camp right now and I used Citristrip to take the coating off and now I'm polishing with EDM stones. I've considered doing that to my AFCK, but it would be hard to do a complete job without disassembling the knife and voiding the warranty. It might come to that anyways, though.:(

I saw a post a while ago (might have been on BF, but I don't think it was for some reason) that Dexter Ewing had somehow convinced someone at Benchmade to make him a 806D2 AFCK with a Satin blade. It looked really nice.

I have recently sanded the coating off my own 806 and it's not quite as difficult as I expected. I mostly used a Scotchbrite-type wheel on my Dremel and then did a not-that-great job of satin finishing the blade with 320 and then 600 grit wet/dry paper. The nice thing is that if your're careful (I wasn't careful enough, really) you can take off the coating and still leave the logo intact, it goes through the coating into the steel.

Dissasembling the knife really is no problem (though it does void the warranty), and I don't see any 'indicators' that would make it obvious that you had done so (unless you break, mis-assemble or lose parts).

Good Luck,

-John

I do not think that BM's 806D2 is coated because they have rust problems it would more to serve for the intended tactical use of the knife to keep blade reflection to a minimum. But yes it would be cool to see an uncoated blade.

I doubt that the knife is coated to reduce light reflection although it does do that. My guess would be that it is coated to give it that tactical look because it is a look that sells.

My guess would be that if Benchmade got a knife back that had all the coating removed that they would have no trouble determining that the knife had been taken apart.

I contacted Benchmade a while back and asked if we would be seeing an uncoated 806D2 and their reply was that there were no plans to do so, but if there was enough interest they could be persuaded to do a special run. Everyone that is interested in getting a knife like this should contact Benchmade and let them know. If enough people do then you just might see this come to be.

I'd have to say that you're probably right on that point Keith.

Unless you are real good at removing the coating around the handle and leave the coating inside the handle part.

It is indeed a look that sells and there has to be a reason for them making and offering that one only most likely the better part of there sales came from BT coated AFCK's.

BT2 :barf: :barf: :barf:

I would love to see them produce some of there designs with a satin D2.

I'm curious about the warranty issue - has anyone bought a BM, checked it out, found no flaws, and then sometime later needed to return it for warranty work? Or are warranty issues noticeable pretty much right away? I beat the heck out of my mini-AFCK for 8 years until someone stole it, without the slightest problem developing.

I was able to find the following limited editions with satin D2 blades:

940D2CF
941D2CF
335D2
770GRN-BLK
960-WW
960D2-21
960D2-22
705-03
46A-01

Considering the popularity of the Axis AFCK, a limited edition with satin D2 or S30V would have no problem selling. As far as the warranty is concerned, I would like to retain my rights because of the reports of omega spring failures or other Axis lock oddities.

Edited to add: I'm not sure if that bali is limited, or if there are other D2 balis.

Perhaps I'm off base here, but I've got a 941D2CF and it seems a lot closer to a mirror finish than a satin finish.
