Benchmark backpacker, not 1095!

I have had a benchmark backpacker for a while and decided to force a patina on it with mustard. Well after about two hours(I forgot about it) no patina! I prefer carbon steel and own Lapin, moras, wood jewel and some stuff in o1 so I'm not inexperienced with 1095 or high carbon steels. I have read reviews on bf where people swear its 1095, and well at $20 I'm not too mad, but I just want anyone who may be considering this knife to be aware it might not be 1095. Has anyone else forced or developed a patina on their backpacker? Ps... Should have just picked up the izula instead.

Looked up the knife and it seems to be a pretty good knife, although i love my Izula more :)
as for the patina issue maybe a good finish could protect it? just throwing an idea out there I have noo clue

Thanks for the info, it sharpens like crappy 440. The site I purchased it from stated 1095. At least it was cheap! Well, I don't have to worry about rust anymore.

440 is good material....any bad or in adequate heat treat can ruin it....
