So my EDC folder recently broke down and i was looking for fixed blade that's small enough to edc (under 3.5 inch blade). Anyway ive been looking at the Benchmark Backpacker and was wondering what kind of steel they use for it, since ive read mixed information. Some say its 1095, some say 440, some say 420. Does anyone have one of these knives, and have a way to tell what steel it is? Also if anyone has any other recommendations for a small fixed blade thats not too expensive those are welcome as well.

Oh and if this is in the wrong section i apologize as this is my first post here.

Thanks!

Well, there's a big difference between 1095 and 420/440, and while there are some inexpensive knives with 1095, I think it's more likely to expect this to be some sort of stainless. If it's not stamped on the blade or indicated on the packaging, the only real way to know might be to buy one and see how it holds up to use and exposure to abrasion, moisture, etc.

I have one of these. Definitely not 1095. Some sort of SS. I bought it to take kayaking. It's not a bad little knife and for the $15(?) I paid for it I wouldn't care if I happened to drop it in the drink while fishing. For what I paid I can't complain, but I wouldn't carry it as an edc. I got it mainly to be disposable. If you want a nice little edc fixed blade, check the Maker's Market here and look for HardedgeKnives. Might cost you $40-50 but he does nice work.

there is a review on this site by "beta464" labelled Benchmark backpacker with all you would ever want to know. it says the blade is 1095 for the record. looks like a decent review.
