I found this knife today in a local gun shop.On the handle it says benchmark by gerber. It also is a manual OTF,with 1990 on the blade.Nice looking knife.Anyway the owner says its a blackie collins design.Hes asking $175, but says I can have it for $150.Is this knife worth it?Its used and shows no sign of use.Theres no box or papers. He says he took it in on a trade for a gun.The knife is in mint shape.Someone please help,as I really have a itch for this piece. One other thing,he said its called the ROLEX....any ideas on this?
Thanks for the help guys,
Jay

I think he meant to say ROLOX and not Rolex. It operates by pushing your thumb on the ramp. The blade slides forward and locks into place. It is hard to do as you have to contort your thumb in a strange angle to be proficient doing it.

As far as it being worth $150? Not sure. I would say no.

If memory serves the steel is Sandvik 13C-26. And if memory serves further it was a knife co-made by Gerber with Blackie Collins's mechanism.

I could be wrong but I think some models were selling for a whole lot more a couple of years back. And they are, no longer, in production.
I believe I paid more than $200 for my sheep-horn handled model in around 1997.
If you have the hots for it and are not looking for an investment, pay the $150.... unless it is one of the MK 2s or whatever they called the cheap plastic handled one.

I've seen them at gun shows for about $150.
They havent made them in a while so might have some collector value. Fighting Knives mag did a write up on them a while back if you can find it.

Knife World did a write up on them in their most recent issue. Very informative article.

Knife looks great!! The blade etch should make it more collectible. What is the closed length? If 4 3/8 inches its a Diamondback, if 4 inches, a Viper, if 3 inches, a Sidewinder. This info is per the article in November 99 Knife World.

Geobar,
The one I have is 4".I picked it up at a local gun shop for $150.
Take care and Happy Thanksgiving

STHIL: is the etching on the blade 1990? Looks like it from the partially obscured pic. That would be pretty strange since they were still being offered in 1997!

Gerber was the second manufacturer of these knives.

It kind of looks like as AG Russell special with the "Final Prod" markings.

Just so you know Marshall Harding bought the Benchmark name and he is now making knives using the mark.

Who is Marshall Harding? He owns National Knife Distributors.

They just released an auto with the Benchmark name.

go to e-bay and do a search for benchmark. I think there is a Viper; anyway it's listed as "benchmark by gerber" which was a surprise to me too. The value of the Rolex is very dependant upon the scale material. Yours looks like a nice one! Is it hard to manipulate open and closed?
