What are some good cheap benchstones? I have a Sharpmaker on the way but I will need something that can take out chips or any damage to the blade, as i understand the sharpmaker would not be suitable for any heavy work. So what are some good benchstones? Im looking for a Extra Coarse or Coarse. I can then finish it up on the sharpmaker.

what, no one sharpens their knives? lol, that could get expensive if you have to keep buying new ones!

For rough work you could get the old carborundum stones -- they wear fast but they do cut. Better would be the coarse DMT hone. Or you could go with emery cloth glued to a flat surface; that's what a lot of northern Alberta trappers rely on.

Thanks for the input, i have herd that sandpaper on foam rubber(IE mousepad) works well, have you tried that? does it work?

sandpaper on a mousepad or styrofoam works good, but it is a technique optimized for putting convex edges on knives.

As stated above, your best bet would be a DMT x-coarse hone! But, any large, coarse hone will do. Check out your local stores for these.
