I apologize if this topic has been beat to death. I am definitely search engine challenged. I tried a search but only found a lot of posts on handheld manual sharpeners.

Is there a good quality electric bench sharpener available that will do a good job on ESEE knives? I'm hoping to find something that allows for angle adjustability.

Thanks

My grandfather has a few expensive ones I've tried before, and they were not quick, did not like thick blades, and the bevels they put on were not very good. They do do a good job on thinner softer blades though, which I tend to think is because they were designed for kitchen knives.

hi, i used to have one of these with a water stone, i dont think they make the waterstone versiona any more.

most of the electric sharpeners are just for kitchen knives, and not really going to give you the edge you want.

i really think you would be better off just using a dmt red and blue stone and your eyeballs for the angle, or the spyderco sharpener.

take it easy

When I first started sharpening my own knives - admittedly my kitchen knives (Globals) I wasn't confident about the angle and used minosharp guide rails.

I'm pretty sure they are set to about 10 - 15' but they may be more out there for different angles.

that type of sharpener makes for a better boat anchor. they tend to remove way too much metal. if you want something electric that will not screw up your knives yet let you choose the angle yourself check into the paper wheels. i sharpen all kinds of knives with them and a lot of members like them too. here is a thread about the wheels with a lot of info on how to use them http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578787

This....

Richards edges are just about as sharp as your going to get a knife.

the electric kitchen sharpeners will eat away the knife faster than a stone........let say you sharpen your esee with the electric sharpener after every couple times you dull the edge with useage... you'll get less than 2 years out of the knife before it will become an ice pick....

Richard j,

what are you thoughts on belt sanders?

Ice Picks can be a very useful tool:D

i use a belt sander when i convex an edge but for a v edge, you cant beat the wheels. i put a convex edge on an izula for revdevil. i also put a v edge on several others which he posted pictures of in this thread. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8430472&postcount=13 the edge on the izula being convexed will look different but is just as sharp since i finished it off on the paper buffing wheel. check out the vids on my website of knives i sharpened slicing newspaper. i have one of a knife i made cutting free hanging newspaper.

I seen those very impressive, though I can't find the actual paper wheel you're referring to..

There have been threads here lately about sharpening, I've commented a few times about field sharpening and using your environment in a survival situation lets say you loose that fancy sharpener you carry, you're lost without it. Most think the knife is all they need and don't know a thing about sharpening. I'm no pro that's for sure, but have the basic concept and understand I can use a rock and paper or bark for stroping to get my knife sharp.. I strictly use belts and I'm interested in the paper thing, as I know I can strop on newspaper by hand :D

you can get the wheels at any woodcraft store or grizzly imports. there are cheap wheels out there but thats exactly what you'll get and i have both the good ones and cheap ones. my first set is going on 19+ years old and still going. here is the link to the manufacturer of the good wheels but i would check woodcraft or grizzly imports first. http://www.sharpeningwheels.com/

I use the paper wheels that Richard sugested. They are awesome. You can sharpen your blade to razor sharp in less than a minute.

i want to mention that anyone getting a set of wheels and has any problems or questions can email or pm me their number and i'll give you a call just as long as you live in one of the 50 states or canada. make sure to include your forum name and real name if its different from your forum name.

any firemen, police officers, emt's can get a set from the manufacturer at a discount just as long as the wheels will be used to keep all the department members knives sharp. you must provide proof that you are a member or send an email from your departments address. i also offer free sharpening to public servants

Richard, can you please post a link to the buffer/grinder you use to mount the paper wheels on?

I've searched both Harbor Freight and Northern Tool but I'm only finding 3600 rpm models.

Thanks

i have a 1/2 hp 1725 blower motor from an old furnace for my portable setup and the other motor i have is similar. if you know someone who puts in furnaces i'm sure they have old belt drive blower motors laying around. they cant be any less than 1/2 hp or you will stall the motor when buffing. send me an email and i'll send you a picture so you can see my setup.
