With my recent introduction into the world of higher end knives and more importantly, higher end steel, I stumbled across the following chart researching the various elements found in stainless steel:

I found this particularly interesting because it was the first clear piece of information that allowed me to understand the benefits of the elements used in knife steel. Up until this point I was getting lost with the significance of why each is used and what their purpose is.

My question to the steel experts: Is this chart accurate?

For reference, here is the Spyderco chart of steel elements found in their products:

Thanks in advance for your answers.

That chart is really interesting. I look forward to hearing from the experts to its accuracy.

According to the Spyderco chart ZDP-189 is all Carbon and Chromium? Strange that such a super steel would seem to be so simple... I'm probably just missing something here though.

The other elements for ZDP-189 are missing because Hitachi has not disclosed them.

A generally informative chart ,though not just for knife steels and not all that accurate. For example nickel is not usually found in knife steels as it is an austenite stabilizer .Vanadium in small amounts is a grain refiner but in large amounts as in S30V [4 % V] produces very hard and wear resistant carbides !! ..Some the effects of alloying elements can be found in the Joe Talmadge Sticky somewhere in this forum.

Well considering the person who just posted is a metalurgist...I think he might know what he's talking about.

I've never understood why these charts never have "Decreases" categories.

It lives on the Toolshed forum.
