Hi, my name is Ben Drew and I am 11 years old. My Grandfather is G L Drew and we made a knife together in his shop this week.

This is the first time that I helped make a knife. It started when I found a scrap of steel on the floor and asked if I could have it. I cut out the shape on Grandpa's power hack saw. (inset by Grandpa: he did get safety instructions before using any machinery) Then I ground the exact shape on the belt sander. I tried to grind the taper on the blade but grandpa had to finish it for me. Grandpa let me watch the steel come out of the furnace; that was really cool with the smoke and fire. I put a small piece of rosewood that I found in a cabinet on the handle. I did almost all of the leather work for the scabbard.

I will use the knife this fall when my dad takes me deer hunting.

Thank you for looking at my new knife.

Ben

(My mom says that grandpa doesn't scowl in pictures, it just hurts his face when he smiles)

Well done! That's a great knife, and you have a great story to tell any time someone asks you about it.

Keep that knife forever! Your grandpa gave you more than just some steel, brass and wood to play around with. He gave you some awesome memories! This is so cool.

Congrats!

I hope you get to field dress a monster buck with your knife! Show us some pictures of the deer when the time comes. It would be great to see!!

That's a sweet looking knife, just treasured item for Ben the rest of his life

Great job GL. Keep at it there is nothing more necessary than a good hobby to carry you through life.

Very nice knife, Ben! Good balance between the handle and blade length and a nice touch with the rosewood.

Maybe Gerry only smiles when he sells knives.

"Indiana, oh Indiana. Indiana we're all for you. We will fight for the Cream and Crimson and the glory of old IU. (I - U !!)" Go Hoosiers!

You are a lucky kid.............

Lucky to have such a loving Grandfather:thumbup: and lucky to have sucha dandy knife :thumbup:

Now if you learn how to sharpen it you'll be all set.

Nice job on knife!! I bought my first hand made knife from your grandfather a few years back in Charlotte.

A nice looking young man for a grandson.......... A nice looking knife that you worked on together............Can't wait until my grandsons are about that age.

By the way, I don't see G L's look as a scowl. He is just like most of us old geezers....... He is as proud as he can be, but it just takes a little longer for his facial muscles to move these days.:D

Another old geezer and grandfather........... Robert

My grandson ask me just last weekend when he was going to be old enough to build a knife and I told him that it wouldn't be much longer. Maybe some time this year. He is also 11 years old.

that is an awesome knife. i love the look of it. use it, alot, just be carful. be sure to hold onto it forever, maybe one day you can give it to your grandson.

keep up the good work. i am sure that one day we will see knives from B. Drew up for sale.

What he said....I hope you keep that knife for the rest of your life and hold it dear as your memories of making it with your Grand Dad.
