Bent Blade on a BK16

I recently aquired a BK16 on another forum and must admit it's one of the best fitting/feeling knives I've had in the hand, light yet stout and extremely utilitarian. It did have some modding on the blade (strip, etc) done but did notice a very distinct bend in the top 1/3rd of the blade. I doubt Kabar does any sort of repair work and really would like to keep this knife and not be swapped out as I have my doubts that I would get a saber ground version back in return (if this is even covered under the warranty). After I e-mailed the individual I got it from he believed he was being overly critical as he noticed the same thing but didn't mention it but I could see how many average users may have not picked it up. I have had obtuse grinds especially near the tips of blades but never seen a blade slightly off center like this before. I e-mailed Kabar to see if something can be done but would there also happen to be anyone out there that has the means of straightening a blade? I would appreciate any feedback on this, thanks!

^^^+1 pics would help. I would let kabar and Ethan do their thing and graciously accept the replacement they will be sending you.

I'll do my best, its very apparent when you look down the spine from the tip but can try to stand the knife up on its spine w/a straight edge line such as on spiral paper to reflect the slight bend. Don't have photo bucket acct. so may need to send the pics to someone to help post if that is even possible otherwise will try to set it up tomorrow.

I'd like to see some pics so if you need someone to post them I could do it for you

is it roll stamped? could be why...

got a vise? you could risk using a 3 wood block method, and gentle pressure, and see what happens.

if you get a replacement, you get current laser etched non saber version most likely. getting a saber would be ... special.

was this one of the signed models?

Yep, only way that I'd see that happening in normal manufacturing was back when they roll stamped things. The roll stamping process put tons of pressure on one side of the blade, and sometimes things got bent a bit. My BK2 has a slight bend in it from this.

If its a Laser engraved one, I have no idea how that would happen.

My brand new Bk-14 has a similar very slight bend also. It begins where the BK&T stamping is and only visible while looking at the spine. . I did not notice it till I stripped it last night. Is there a cause for concern with this? Sorry to hijack..

don't confuse taper with bend. try both sides. if they look the same, it's taper. can't go from N to N/2 to N/4 thickness without some changes in apparently width.

and nope, no concerns are warranted. if you HATE it, contact KaBar

I think I will keep it then... and once I add the handles, I won't notice it anyway, plus I Hate Returns... Thanks Blade

That pic does not cause ANY concern from me at all. Still PLENTY useable. My BK14 is EXACTLY the same as yours.

Rill stamped BK 14. A few got away from the factory.

Use it like it was intended.

Will do, and since it is covered with a lifetime warranty, it puts my mind at ease.....But just ordered another one as a backup..lol

I think industrial products may present some small problem. You can use it normally on tasks?

I did get a couple pics taken and will put them up soon, it does sort of look like the bend similiar to that BK14, I did however send it in to KABAR about 10 days ago so curious to see what the outcome will be. Considered some sort of vise method but didn't want to worsen it or risk any warranty that may apply.

A vice would have broken it, well, maybe. I've done that to a few of the BK14's that were bent, tried to find an at home method of straightening. If anything, it will be put in a straightener, or you will probably get a new knife.

Either way, I would expect it soon, 10 days is about the typical turn around on stuff like that, or less actually.

Thats funny you mention 10 days is the typical turn-around Moose, a FFG model just arrived UPS but was amazed to see the letter inside stating "our warranty only applies to the original purchaser of the knife only also any modification (in this situation just paint stripping) voids the warranty. They did swap it out and kept the Sabre ground version though. OK, trying to post the pics of the bend (hope this works), more distinct in one of these pics.
