Hi , everyone names Brad and I'm new to the site, quick question I just got started about 3 years ago and just let my first knife ever go. I gave it to a farmer down the road that I one would use it hard. Anyway I messaged him and asked how the blade was doing he said it hold a edge better than any knife he's ever had, which I was extremely happy to hear. However he also told me the tip, maybe a quarter inch of it, bent while he was trying to pry a snap ring from somewhere on a tractor. My question is, could this be a heat treat problem or is it just a using a onife as a pry bar problem. I used 1095 and heat treated the same way that is widely used by most people.

Yeah that was my thoughts I'd rather it bend than snap. But I used 1/8 inch steel and after the quench I heat treated at 375 for and hour twice.

Might be time to find a small piece of that steel and make a mini pry bar for his pocket. Plenty of patterns out there to inspire you, widgies and shards and the like. Change up the HT a little and see what happens.

It’s good to hear that your buddy is putting the knife to use. However, prying with it is deviating from its intended use. He complimented the knife on how well it holds an edge so the heat treat is probably fine. I am on board with the idea of getting this guy a prying tool.

Thanks everyone that was my thought with it holding a edge as well as he said it does. I might actually throw together a quick pry bar for him.
