Bent tip repair

I recently got one of the BRKT machetes. It's a really nice piece of work- I like the handle, the grind, and the balance. The problem is mine looks like someone dropped it on the tip. About 1/4 of an inch is bent to about 90 degrees.

Should I try to beat it back straight, just grind it off, or ...? I know I can send it back to Bark River, but I'm not sure the tip is all that important on a machete (please correct me if I'm missing something), and I'd really rather fix it myself anyway, if possible.

If you're thinking about one of these, I'd say go for it- a bit pricey, but SO much better than any machete I've ever seen!

1. Why would you accept a defective knife?

2. If it bent 90 degrees without breaking, then the heat treat is seriously screwed up.

Send it back and make them send you a different one (measure it).

Well, you've got a point there with #1- just trying to avoid the hassle of sending it back and maybe have the pride of having fixed it myself.

I wonder about #2 though, that's why I'm asking. 1095 is tough to begin with, and I assume it would be done a little softer on a machete than a regular knife. That's probably why it didn't break- but that doesn't mean it would be any good if I straightened it. That's what I'm hoping to find out.

Bending to 90 degrees without breaking is not that hard to accomplish- ask Busse, Swamp Rat, Ed Fowler, and any ABS smith.

Actually, though, I really doubt I could trust it if I straightened it, so maybe I will look into returning it.

Thanks for the response!

Maybe someone from BRKT will see this and have a comment. Or someone might notice this if it was posted on knifeforums. Someone might be concerned.

machete steel is meant to be softer, I would be more surprised if it broke.

You should try to straighten it yourself. Real hard-use machetes are meant to be sharpened with a file anyway so it's like you are abusing the thing.

You can still send it back to BRKT after you work on it. They're always willing to repair the blade (even though this is a modified Ontario).

I'm not getting the feeling that this machete came NIB with the tip bent...did you get it used?

Yes, I bought it new from Knives Ship Free. I went to the BRKT section of knife forums, but they have it in sections now and none of them seemed to fit.

Does anyone know if Knives Ship Free takes returns/exchanges? I know Bark River will make it good, but sometimes that takes a while.
