Berghaus bit

I don't like to put axe heads in vinegar, but this one was so covered in rust that I did give it a vinegar soak. When I took it out I was surprised at the size of the tempered bit. I've not seen one quite as significant. Thought it was worth a look. Thanks to Tall Steve, I have learned that the Berghaus was made by P.Berghaus in Goteburg, Sweden. I look forward to restoring this one.

Cool, welded insert.
A hamon would never be that dark or irregular line of distinction.
 
Cool axe for sure,thanks for posting this.

The "size" of the insert is hard to judge without a top,or a bottom view,but it looks like a "wrap-weld",vs the inserted, "cleft" kind.In which case it's actually somewhat less,as far as the useful length of blade is concerned,as it'll expose iron when worn to the inside of the base of it's "V"...
