How many of yall are out there picking black beeries and the like right now. Where ya from? What do you like to do with them? Any other wilds foods you harvest?

I have about 3 quarts of blackberries in my freezer right now, from 3 picking sessions, Ive got them growing on my property and up close to where I work. Raspberries are becoming harder and harder to find here where I live in WV

At some point I may make some jam or cobbler, right now I am enoying a bout a pint of them just after picking while I freeze a quart.I also like choke cherry jam and picking apples and nuts

1k posts yahoo.

Hey...

Although we should have been collecting them, most of the berries get consumed while out in the field..
My kids and I have been going 2-4 times a week for bike rides down a long 30 km trail (old railway line) and have been picking mulberries and raspberries..Kids really enjoy them, however we can't seem to collect any to bring home..LOL

We also got in a nice little patch of wild strawberries that were the size as the first knuckle on your thumb.

Have also been looking for Elderberries, however they are harder to find.. An aunt of mnine makes Wonderful elderberry pie...

Have fun..

I've been eating them as I go, had some today fishing near work.

I only eat the black ones 'cause I dont know if the red ones would bother my stomach, that only leaves a few ripe to eat, not exactly a harvest.

Growing up we seriously harvested everything that grew- right down to scouring the National Forest for old homesteads that left behind Fruit and nut trees. Those were secret hidey holes when you could find them. Everything got canned or frozen short of a few fresh cobblers. One year we havrested an 8' truck bed of walnuts to sell to the orchard.
Now, we are far from the farm and what we find is finger food- my little girl crushes Blackberries and Rasberries- mixes a touch of sugar and either eats it on bread or adds water for a fruit drink :) Just watch for rattlers picking blueberries or chink-a-pins !!

Elderberry is in bloom right now, so now is the time to drive around and spot the flowers and record the location for harvesting the fruit later on.

Yall pick greens?

Any good books or websites on wild eats with nutritional tables

Two weeks ago I was eating lots of wild strawberries in NH. Even convinced my son, wife and mother in law to try them. They loved them also. Blackberries and blueberries aren't ripe yet up in NH.
