I have a Douk-Douk and now a Shih-Ling Taiwan folder (South China traditional I suppose you could call it) but I'd like to lay hands on a Laguiole somedays, and some of the other French knives like Nontron and such, and what is the Spanish stylet? I dunno if that's considered traditional or not, then there's the Japanese brass handled friction folder.

Thing is I don't see much mention of these blades and just curious if I'm the only one who likes them, and frankly outside of the French knives I'd like to know if there's a place or way to get some decent European knives, the Spanish knives look okay but, geeze, are they cheap! who knows though, maybe they're actually decent?

And why not show them off? en? a little "other/odd" traditional folder pictures? (and give me an idea what's out there :D)

Here's my two so far.

Yes, I'm always looking for traditional brands from other countries. Pradel-Brossard, Opinel, Victorinox, Mercator, Helle, Karesuando, Ahti, Mora/Frosts, khukris...

I am currently looking a Laguile and Higonokami (Japanese friction folder) myself. Found some nice ones, now I just need to get money to buy 'em. So far I haven't found Douk Douk's here but I have quite few Opinel's and Svord Peasant. They're really good working knives. I need to get pictures up.

Yea the Laguiole's are $$$ aren't they? good ones, and the bigger sized which I prefer, can be 100$+ dollars but you get hand filed spines and nice woods like ebony so it's worth it.

And Jani? there's plenty of European online knife stores that carry the Douk, ether in original carbon or 440.

Krull, which Spanish knives are you looking at? I have a big navaja from JJ Martinez; I'll post a pic when I get home from work. It's a monster, with a 6" blade; I'm looking to try out a more pocket-friendly size.

Really gotten into the older Finnish and Swedish knives. The Douk Douk and other regional knives are very interesting, and easy (cheap ;)) to acquire.

I love and use Opinels in stainless and carbon as well as douk-douk's my personel favorite is the Mercator K-55 Black Cat knife which I see as a slightly more modernized Douk-douk.

Krull, if you were the only one who liked 'em there wouldn't be so many threads about them...Just sayin'...("Search" will provide many links to various "traditional" knives from around the world.)

Many of us, myself included, have a variety of such knives in our collection.

True but we need a thread just for all the other stuff folks use around the world.

Here's the thing:I know the navaja and the stylet and...that's it! I get the idea the Spanish had a few others we're missing.
and I've seen smaller navaja's on World Knives, maybe 3 1/2 inch blades? stylet's are interesting in being long pointy things.

The Mercator line almost exclusively seems to be the K66K, but there is a web site where you can order them in plain black (without the cat logo), with red as well as black handles, and in different sizes.

Already done. Exhibit #1.

Double up that raise!

It would be interesting to have some history added to these knives as well. When they were produced, what they were used for, etc. Why and how they are used today as well. Historical pics would be a special treat.

I do like non-USA knives and have several, but 98% of my collection is USA made knives.
