I'm looking for a defense oriented fixed blade larger than 10", below $150. I've been looking at a Cold Steel Hand and a Half dagger, a Cold Steel Natchez Bowie, and a random Japanese Tanto in 1080. Any recommendations?

Himalayan imports kukri. Look into them they are great and in your price/size/purpose range. Hope this helps. Maybe a sirupati. Or a wwII or m43. Check them out.

Esee Junglas. 10.38" blade. You can find em for $150 if you look around...

As far as defense goes, I'm pretty sure it'd poke a hobo, and hack off arms pretty easily.

A used shotgun will do you better in that role, but the CS Gurkha can be found in that price range and I can't think of a knife I'd rather have if pressed into fighting with a blade.

Yeah, getting a concealed weapons permit and gun would be better than any blade. That said I would look at the crkt hisshou but it is over you price range. It is designed by James Williams and really only has one use. I like the idea of the junglas though. It could serve your purpose but also be used for actual big knife things like chopping or batoning. Also the sheath on the junglas is top of its class.

Just buy a kitchen knife. Make some delicious BBQ and if you're still worried about break ins, move outta TX! Much cheaper than a defense lawyer after you lop off someone's arm :D

I guess I must have missed the part about the OP living in Texas.... I do too and I carry all kinds of fixed blades. Any one of em would make a mess of somebody if necessary. I just carry for utility, and if my utility blade needs to go into defense mode, so be it. I don't plan on it though!

5.5" is a very, very generous blade length. I feel fortunate to live in a state where I can pack five and a half inches of steel on my hip legally! I think 5.5 is plenty.

Ontario Spec-plus line, several there that would fit your criteria. Use 5160 steel and are priced well for what you get.

I went ahead and bought the natchez, since the design appeals to me so much. I know it isn't legal to carry, but I'd just keep it in my room or car.

Awesome choice. I love that blade. Something about the lines just speaks to me

Another vote for Ontario RtakII. Over 10 inches of 5160, flat ground. Very tough, resilient yet will slice. If you can find a Browning Crowell Barker competition knife I believe it's over 10 inches and convex ground very sharp for out of the box competitions. Mine is dangerous. Probably SK5 being as it's from Taiwan and they call it 1080 high carbon steel. Whatever it is it is an awesome chopper, cutter and tough. Around $125 at most places that I've seen it.

Even in TX you can carry whatever you want in your own house. Just put it down if the cops come around. :) Big knives are scary!

Congrats on the Natchez BTW. My recommendations are for future readers.

Do a Google search of Cold Steel Natchez - one of the first hits includes the phrase "it's broken". Look at the pictures.
It should be fine for your planned use... but yikes

It broke cause the dumbass tried batoning it by whacking the handle. Id expect any knife to give out if you did that enough.

I just picked up a Cold Steel Warrior Tanto w/ 13" blade. Used, it should be available under $150. It's a beautiful piece, and would make a great SD knife, but as that's not how I roll, it's just a conversation piece. I will whip it out for watermelon duty, though.
