I am looking for the best $100 folding hunter knife with a drop point blade shape in the 3.25" to 4" range. This knife will be used to field dress moose, black bear and whitetail deer. I am looking for it to just do the field dressing stuff out in the bush, I have bigger knives at the camp for quartering and the larger tasks.

Something strong that can stand up to maybe having to make fuzz sticks for a fire or small chores while hunting. Also something light enough so it doesn't feel like I have a brick in my pocket. What do you think?

EDIT sorry, I missed that part about the weight!

I was thinking Buck's Alaskan Guide in S30V.

That's what I was thinking too. But not a drop point and not very lite.

Gerber Gator 154cm has a drop point and also can be had as part of a "Big Game" kit. Knife by its self is about $40.

The "Kit" is about $100.

Leatherman also makes the E55 that is drop point and has 154cm.

When the Izula folder comes out it will probably meet these needs well. FFG drop point in D2. Although, it might not be over 3".

About 85% of my collection are hunters but I rarely use folders for field dressing altough I did work on a moose last season with my Bladetech pro hunter magnum and I must say it's the best folding hunter I used so far. You might have to bust your budget for this one though.

FFG FRN endura ZDP or VG-10, FRN stretch, Gayle Bradley M4, JYD II CB.

Definitely check out this guy's videos.

He hunts 44 dear per hunting season in Japan (where there is a severe overpopulation problem, apparently), so he really uses his knives.

He spent this past season figuring out which fixed blade and folder he likes the best. Very, very good info in his vids based on real field experience.

Between the Bladetech Pro Hunter Classic CPM154 and the Spyderco Stretch VG-10 which one would be better suited to field dressing game?

CS Voyager, CS Recon 1 or American Lawman would do the job great.

Also a Buck 110 if you are on a Budget.

Guys im looking for a DROP POINT style blade for under $100. Something like the Spyderco Stretch and Blade Tech Pro Hunter style blade really are interesting. Any other suggestions besides the Buck 110???

You already mentioned two of the best (Spyderco Stretch & Blade-Tech Pro Hunter), but I'd like to also suggest this guy:

The Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter, and it's well within your specified price range. Here's a link to a better picture.

I would second the stretch II. I have used it to clean quail all the way through animals the size of whitetails. The thing that I like most about this knife is that it is comfortable in many different handholds. The blade is thin, but plenty tough, with a nice belly and is simply a joy to use.

Cheers,
Shane

Buck makes more models than just the 110;)

The 3.45" 154CM blade of a Benchmade Griptillian 551 is a modified drop point. AXIS lock - thumb studs - reversible clip - thumb jimping on scales and blade. It is also available serrated. Certainly less than the $100 - and a great value.

The Kershaw JYDII, 1725SG2, in Ti-framelock and a laminated SG2 edge, has a sort-of drop point blade of 3.75" that comes razor sharp - and mine have kept that through some determined wood/cardnoard, and sheet plastic use. Out of production, our own 'Kershawguy' has 'blemished' examples for $79 shipped in the US. The regular production JYDII with a composite blade of 14C28N/CPM-D2, 1725CB, should also be available - it's still in production - for <$100 shipped. Hard to fault it, either, with it's liner-lock and good gripping G10 scales.

You could also order a Buck Custom Shop 110 built for you - and get finger grooves, no pins, nickel silver bolsters, S30V blade, choice of several less expensive woods for the scales (You'll need a deeper wallet for water buffalo, etc!), choice of sheaths, and s/h for your c-note. Might have to wait 3-6+ weeks - but they are worth it!

I would have offered the Cabella's BUCK PBS in CPM S30V as the first knife for this thread for most purposes. I was just wondering what type of drop point you were looking for, as many people think of drop point as different depending on point position and how acute you would like the tip.

The Spyderco Manix 2 is kind of a drop point (at least functionally), isn't too heavy and is about a strong a folder as a human being can find for less that $100.
