I'm looking for an airsoft gun for some backyard plinking and target shooting. As far as style goes, I like models like the Beretta 92FS airsoft, but I'd like a nice one (but under $130 or so) in terms of precision, and I don't know if the 92FS is a precise or well-made gun.

Most of the stuff out there under $50 is junk. Depending on where you are, you might be better off getting an air rifle with that 130.00. If you're out there running around with an airsoft gun that looks like a Beretta 92, your neighbors aren't going to like it any better than if you were running around with a Crosman or Gamo air rifle.

My solution, go to the nearest flea or farmers market you can find, buy a 20 dollar airsoft pistol that looks like a Beretta 92, and buy a jar of airsoft bbs. Then, go to your local Walmart or Dicks Sporting Goods and buy either a Crosman 1377 and a carbine stock for it, and a tin of .177 pellets, or a Gamo Shadow and a tin of .177 pellets. Take that to your local range, and learn to shoot, rather than wasting your hard earned money on the airsoft. The only good airsoft out there, or so I've heard, is the brand Tokyo Marui, and they are very expensive, you could just get a used Beeman or RWS air rifle instead. I bought a lot of airsofts, enough to pay for a couple Crosmans or Gamos. They were pieces of junk, and jammed after about 2 months. I just gave my left over jar of airsoft bbs to my little brother.

You have to pay a lot for a good quality airsoft pistol - Western Arms, Tokyo Marui etc. Silenthunterstudios is right, buy a half decent air pistol by the likes of RWS, Crosman etc and learn to shoot it well.

Hi. One of my mates just bought a ICS MP5A4. Its pretty much all-metal, has a good solid feel to it & has a tactical flashlight built into the forestock switched on by pressure switches on both sides. He takes part in huge airsoft "battles" with other aitrsofters & had the power of this baby pumped up (dunno how!) his was about £200.
I bought a cheapo G36C for about £40 whick came with ammo. battery, charger, laser sight with pressure switch, RIS fore-handle, red-dot scope, sling & a pair of safety glasses. Im sure to a dedeicated airsofter its a piece of crap but for "plinking" its great fun & on full-auto its amazing!!

Dunno how much longer we'll be able to have these.

British Government are even looking at banning AIRSOFT guns & other replicas!!! Honestly, talk about a nanny state! Theyre looking at extending opening hours in pubs which will surely increase drink-related violence, drink driving, accidents, alcoholism etc but theyre gonna stop you owning a plastic gun that fires little plastic balls"! Ridiculous!

Gawd! I WISH I could move to the US!

I own both the 18C and 26C Glocks from KSC (one from japan the other from taiwan... it makes little difference)

Both are very high quality and I've had no trouble with either after firing thousands of rounds (and a bunch of green gas) through them.

Look for package deals which include gas and BB's with the gun for the best starter deal.

Both are full auto versions of the full sized real life guns... Full auto ROCKS!

Just Make sure and buy extra mags since you go through ammo pretty fast in full auto!

Like others have said, Tokyo Mauri, KSC and Wester Arms all make good gas pistols. Tokyo Mauri now have 2 models of there AEP = auto electric pistol it uses small rechargable batteries instead of gas, but dos not have the blow back and moving slide action, and one of them is the select fire Beretta 92f the other is the select fire Glock 18c. I have also heard good reviews on KSC's Glocks and most of Western Arms 1911 models. Western arms is the most expensive of the three. You should expect to pay at least 125-150 for a good gun, not including the cot of gass and bb's, but hten many retailers have "new player packages".

Like SHS said, if you local laws allow you may be better off betting a decent air rifle. But then you can't run around with you friends shooting at each other in the woods with an air rifle....

Silenthunterstudios has got me thinking about getting the rifle instead. If I could find a close shooting range, it could be a cool hobby to take up, and unlike getting a pistol style airsoft gun it could actually serve a practical purpose if I ever get into hunting, whereas outside of shooting cans around and self-defense/home defense/law enforcement there's not much need for handguns. I also might consider paintballing instead, as I have a couple of friends that are into it (and I tend to think finding a shooting range around me would be difficult).

For just a little bit more money, you could get a Beeman P3 (or the german version: Weihrauch HWPC40). I have the weihrauch (they're identical, Beeman imports them as the P3 but but both are available in the U.S. now).
It has a grip angle, size, and weight thats fairly similar to a berreta 92/M9 (I also have a taurus model 92 :D ). Just has finger grooves in the front strap. Also has combat style sights that are about the same, except they are adjustable.
The trigger is unbeleivably light, with very little take up and very little over travel. Probably the most accurate gun I own.
Its a single shot, single stroke pneumatic which some folks may find boring, but I think its perfect for plinking and target shooting. You don't have to buy any stupid CO2 cartridges or deal with the change in pressure (which affects point of impact) that comes with temperature changes and the number of shots you've fired. Power is low enough that you can easily set up a backstop and shoot it in a long hall way or basement, same as an airsoft gun. Also pretty quiet.
Here's a side by side shot of one with a 92. They don't look THAT much alike, but in hand they've got a pretty similar feel.
You can get the P3/HW40 at www.pyramidair.com

I've been giving the P-3/HW40 and the Webley-Scott Nemesis serious consideration. Both seem to have excellent reputations.

As I understand, the HW40/P3 handle is actually derivative of the Walther P99.

If you're looking for a gas operated airsoft pistols, Tokyo Marui, Western Arms and KSC are solid choices. Kuan Ju Works (KJ) makes some affordable full metal guns, which can be a bit rough around the edges, but good quality overall. For spring operated single shot pistols, only Marui makes decent ones IMO.

But if you're just looking for target shooting or plinking, airsoft guns might not be the best choice, since they are inherently not very accurate and the ammo is lightweight. (There are some spesific target guns though) IMO a pneumatic air pistol like the HW40/P3 or a similar model (Gamo makes another decent gun) might be a good choice. If you're looking for a more rapid firing pistol, a fine metal repeater modeled after the 92F is made in Germany by Umarex. It's CO2 powered. It is distributed by Beretta itself (as well as the manufacturer) and should be widely available. Gamo makes a gun based on the Bretta Cougar. It has more plastic parts.

Similar pistols are made be almost all the big airgun companies. They are operated much like a revolver actually, with a rotary magazine (usually 8 shot). The double action mode in many of these guns is pretty bad. I personally would get a revolver model (the German-made S&W replicas are fine indeed), so the action would correspond with the realsteel counterpart. Daisy used to make (still makes?) some blowback models I believe, but these fire bb ammo, and are not as precise or refined guns. The Umarex Walther PPK replica is similar, but better made.

Crosman offers a pistol based on their S&W autoloader air pistol replica converted to fire airsoft ammo. A sort of a curiosity, but it is powerful and uses CO2 cartridges opposed to the sometimes hard to find and expensive airsoft gases.

But as for the best out of the box Airsoft Beretta 92 replica, that'd likely be a Western Arms made gun. Out of your price range probably. A full metal KJ Works model would be my choice for value, they have several different berettas. Digicon makes a target shooting oriented 92F, non blowback, no hop-up, might be hard to find. KSC makes a full auto M93R, make sure it's the newer improved II model.

If you still want an air pistol, Gamo makes several models after the HK USP, Walther PPK and I believe the Beretta 92 models. Mine cost about $50 at Walmart, and while it is not as accurate as a Beeman or RWS, or even a Crosman, it is a better alternative to the airsoft. Single shot .177, semi auto bbs(steel). Also, the Crosman pistol that looks like a "Dirty Harry" style .357. I had one of those when I was about 15, WM still sells those, but they run about $50 too.

But, after having said that, I'd still go with what I originally said, the Crosman or Beeman or RWS. Maybe an old Sheridan.
